History The University of Scranton

Late in the 19th century, 1888 to be precise, the first Bishop of Scranton, namely William O'Hara, undertook something extraordinary. He set the foundation stone of what was then known as St. Thomas College. Picture this, it's September 1892, and 62 young men, full of dreams and ambitions, walk through the gates as the college opens its doors for the first time. The college transitions from being managed by local priests to Xaverian Brothers, and eventually to Christian Brothers in 1897.

As the college evolved throughout the years, three distinct segments were formed: the college department, a two-year commercial program, and St. Thomas High School, which continued until 1938. Imagine it being 1895, a Jesuit priest named Daniel J. MacGoldrick arrives from Georgetown University to become the college's president, serving until his unfortunate death in 1900. From 1924 onwards, the college's authority to award bachelor's degrees in arts and science, and master of science, was validated through a State Charter.

Fast forward to 1938, the Christian Brothers felt it was time for a change. So, they rechristened the college as 'University of Scranton'. Also, they broke the mold by allowing women to join the evening division. An innovation in the campus culture began with the Drama Club starting productions in 1893, followed by student publications evolving over the years. Culminating in the reflective Windhover yearbook, first published in 1948 and the Glee Club, reminiscing their start way back in 1925, and a semi-monthly book review called Best Sellers: The Semi-Monthly Book Review in 1941.

Years went by and, in 1942, a shift in governance occurred. The baton was handed over to the Society of Jesuits. In 1944 Scranton Preparatory School was established, marking another milestone in educational development. Post World War II, returning veterans created the need for more classroom spaces, leading to the construction of three barracks on the former Scranton Estate.

In 1950, things took a major leap as the Graduate School was established offering courses in diverse fields such as Education, Business Administration, Chemistry, History, and English. All these courses accepted women right off the bat. In the following year, 1951, an Army ROTC unit was established, liberally offering an option to non-veterans through freshman and sophomore years.

The University saw a massive expansion during the period from 1956 to 1966, with no less than fifteen new buildings popping up. Among these were Casey, Fitch, Martin, and McCourt, the initial residence halls for students, erected in 1958. Dear readers, you can imagine the buzz and buzz when students began to move into their new living spaces!

With the groove of the 60s, opposition to the Vietnam War resulted in changes being made to student regulations and campus life. Things like mandatory coats became a thing of the past. Meanwhile, students were given relatively more freedom. We saw the onset of the gradual relaxation of rules, which would become a mainstay in universities across the globe.

As we move towards the present, we see more developments taking place. Women had been participating since 1938, but they were technically admitted to The College of Arts and Science in 1972. The University Commons was formed in 1980 with the closure of Linden Street. More facilities including recreational complex, classroom and library buildings were added in the late 20th century.

Our journey comes to an end in the first decade of the 21st century. The Kania School of Management being established in 2000, and the first doctoral program being set up by the Department of Physical Therapy in 2004. Fast forward to the recent events, in 2020, the university is proud of its strategic plan that continues to cherish Jesuit heritages and aims to provide education that is "engaged, integrated, global."

From a humble commencement in 1888 to the present, the University of Scranton has evolved majestically, remaining true to its roots yet constantly innovating. It has morphed from a small commuter school with less than 1,000 students to a thriving University with roughly 5,500 diverse students. For any ambitious student or progressive parent, the University of Scranton represents an enduring beacon of knowledge, wisdom and inclusivity.
