Nestled in the heart of Jefferson County, West Virginia, resides Shepherd University with a fascinating history that starts back in July of 1871. It was around this time when the county seat moved from Shepherdstown to Charles Town. The townsfolk, not wanting the old courthouse to gather dust, had a brilliant idea. They decided to renovate the vacated premises and use it to ignite the spark of knowledge.
And so, Shepherd College was given birth by seven inspired men, namely C. W. Andrews, Alexander R. Boteler, C. T. Butler, G. M. Beltzhoover, David Billmyer, Samuel Knott, and Henry Shepherd. They scrawled out an article of incorporation, which marked the birth of a great institution. Designed to hone students “in languages, arts and sciences,” the school appointed its first principal, Professor Joseph McMurran, opening its doors for 42 students with a curriculum set by the dedicated board of trustees in September 1871.
However, the spark of Shepherd's greatness had just started to ignite. On February 27, 1872, the Legislature of West Virginia enacted an act rooting the establishment of a branch of the State Normal School at Shepherd College. And, from then on, Shepherd College was on the move.
In 1930, the delightful summer month of July saw Shepherd evolving into a four-year college, dedicated towards the crafting of future educators. The college ventured into offering the bachelor of arts degree, broadening the opportunity for its students. As the world was amidst a great war in 1943, Shepherd was authorized to incorporate liberal arts programs into its curriculum.
The year 1950 marked two significant milestones in Shepherd's journey. The college began granting the Bachelor of Science degree alongside the Bachelor of Arts. It also gained accreditation by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. A year later, in 1951, it extended its academic affiliations by joining the Association of American Colleges.
Yet the evolution of Shepherd College did not stop there. It ascended to higher educational glory when it was officially transformed into Shepherd University on April 7, 2004, thanks to the legislation signed by Governor Bob Wise.
Shepherd University, over the past two decades embraced advancement in every possible way. The institute has grown to include 11 modern buildings, hosting several multimillion-dollar state-of-the-art facilities from the Robert C. Byrd Science and Technology Center to the Scarborough Library, and an impressive nursing classroom building.
A significant addition that the students loved bathing in was the Wellness Center, inaugurated on June 11, 2009. This $21.6 million investment houses an eight-lane pool, basketball courts, racquetball courts, and a comprehensive fitness area among other facilities, catering to the holistic well-being of students. Shepherd also expanded its residential facilities, inaugurating a 298-bed dormitory on the West Campus in 2017.
