Just imagine, it's October 13 in the year 1849. In the quaint town of Huntsville, Texas, a simple but grand idea is about to be birthed by a visionary missionary named Daniel Baker. This Princeton and Hampden-Sydney educated man has an ambition to expand the ever-growing sphere of knowledge. It is on this day that Austin College takes its first breath, embodied within a charter, personally signed by Texas Governor George Wood. This charter, however, isn't ordinary. It's modeled along the lines of the illustrious Harvard, Yale, and Princeton.
Baker decided to honor the Texas historical stalwart, Stephen F. Austin by christening the college after him. To top it all off, the land on which Austin College was established had a significant historical traction itself being donated by the Austin family. Adding to its sheen were two other Texas heavyweights, Sam Houston and Anson Jones, serving as trustees on its board.
Presidency wasn't a walk in the park for the founding president Samuel McKinney. An Irish-born Presbyterian minister, he served the college not once, but twice, with his second term running from 1862 to 1871. Then the baton passed to Samuel Magoffin Luckett, the fourth president of Austin College. However, the college, under Luckett, faced its share of trials and tribulations, including yellow fever epidemics and the ramifications of the civil war. Consequently, the college had to find a new home, which it eventually found in Sherman in 1878.
An event that shook the very foundations of the college occurred on January 21, 1913. Old Main, the heart and soul of Austin College was engulfed by a raging fire that reduced it to ashes within hours. Yet, what emerged from the ashes was the indomitable spirit of the senior class and the faculty, who stood by their institute. They even managed to continue their college work the next day. The tragic incident awakened a strong sense of community spirit, and the citizens of Sherman banded together, raising an impressive $50,000 to help rebuild the college.
Over the years, Austin College has seen an array of esteemed visitors. From the magicians Harry Houdini and Harry Blackstone Sr., to the opera singer Madame Schumann-Heink, presidents William Howard Taft and George H.W. Bush, it's been a mixed bag of intellects and entertainers.
Fast forward to 1994, we see Oscar Page taking the helm of Austin College as its 14th president. Page, during his tenure of 1994–2009, metamorphosed the college's fortunes by increasing its endowment by nearly 80%. His acumen as a fundraiser became visible with the success of the "Campaign for the New Era." A whooping $120 million was raised, making it the largest fundraiser in the history of Austin College. Under Page's leadership, the campus saw the construction of some landmark buildings and renovation of key centers.
2009 was a hallmark year for Austin College as it saw its first female and Jewish president, Marjorie Hass take charge. Adding to the progress led by her predecessors, she managed the construction of the IDEA Center and two new housing complexes. The IDEA Center, a massive 103,000 square feet space, houses a variety of classrooms, labs, and the largest telescope in the region, the Adams Observatory. Even more impressive is its LEED Gold certification, a validation of its sustainable architecture.
