In the serene town of Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, dating back to the year 1871, the State Normal School's establishment took root, designed specifically to nurture the noble profession of teaching. It was established with a focus on seven counties, called the seventh district. Envisioned as the cornerstone of education, it proudly stood as a magnificent 212 ft building, a symbol of potential and promise, later to be known as the Cumberland Valley State Normal School. Its objective? Pure and simple. To educate and train teachers. It was such a significant step that in 1917, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania took ownership.
As the story of Shippensburg University progresses, we turn the pages to June 4, 1926. An important milestone was achieved on this day. The institution was honored with the privilege to grant the Bachelor of Science degree in two major fields- elementary and junior high education. And the tale doesn't end there. A few months later, on October 12, 1926, it received a charter, making history by being the first normal school to rise to the level of a state teachers college in Pennsylvania.
Confirming its illustrious journey in education, the State Council of Education, exactly on June 3, 1927, gave the green light for a name change. As a result, our institution was rechristened the State Teachers College at Shippensburg. Silently, it stood, a beacon of light for the state.
Fast forward to December 3, 1937, a day where the school's business education curriculum was given thumbs up. Confirmation of its high standards came on December 8, 1939, when it became the first teachers college in Pennsylvania to receive accreditation from the Middle States Association of colleges and (Secondary) Schools. How's that for a feather in its cap?
The New Year of 1959 began with a bang, as on January 7, the State Council of Education endorsed the Master of Education degree. Within a year, precisely on January 8,1960, an alteration of nomenclature was authorized, and the institution became Shippensburg State College.
Continuing to reinvent itself, the arts and sciences curriculum got stamped with authorization by the State Council of Education on April 18, 1962. The effect of approval paved the way for the initiation of the Bachelor of Science in business administration degree program, kicking off on September 1, 1967.
One of the most monumental points in the history of the college was November 12, 1982. On this day, the governor of the Commonwealth put pen to paper on the Senate Bill 506, leading to the establishment of the State System of Higher Education. Come July 1, 1983, and Shippensburg State College received the royal title of Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania.
Walking towards modernity, the University embarked on preserving its history as well. Since 1985, many of the original, historic buildings, including Old Main, were added to the list of the National Register of Historic Places. Talk about holding onto your roots while you grow, isn't it? So, that's the journey of Shippensburg University, a story of evolution, growth, and constant reinvention!
