The inception of the Centenary College of Louisiana began long before it got its current name, tracing back to two earlier institutions founded in the 19th century. Established in 1825, the College of Louisiana at Jackson was initially carved out by the Louisiana state legislature. Courses in varied subjects like English, French, Greek, Latin, logic, and rhetoric along with ancient and modern history, mathematics, as well as natural, moral, and political philosophy were incorporated in the curriculum.
In the year 1839, the Mississippi Conference sought to create Methodist-based leaning, paving the way for the Centenary College. Initially set up in Clinton, Mississippi, the college shifted base to Brandon Springs. However, the financial crunch in 1845 marked the decline of the College of Louisiana, which caught the attention of Centenary College.
By 1846, the Centenary College saw an opportunity to strengthen its roots and bought the facility of the College of Louisiana in Jackson. With the new acquisition came the amalgamation of both colleges, aptly rechristened as Centenary College of Louisiana. Graduates from Louisiana and Centenary colleges were now united under one alumni. The 1850s marked a period of prosperity with enrollment touching 260 and the establishment of a large central building comprising classrooms, laboratories, a library, a chapel, offices, and an auditorium with a seating capacity of over 2,000.
However, the prosperous era hit a roadblock with the onset of the American Civil War. In the fall of 1861, as the faculty noted, all the students left for war and the precious institution was occupied by the Confederate and Union troops. Helped by divine grace, the institution sprang back on its feet in the fall of 1865 but faced financial difficulties for the rest of the 19th century.
In a turn of events, the Shreveport Progressive League's offer to relocate the college was accepted by the Louisiana Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. And so, 1906 saw a new chapter in the life of Centenary College as it moved to Shreveport, Louisiana, in 1908. This shift marked an exponential increase in both enrollment and course offerings, and by 1925 it got the accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
Through the roaring 20s and 30s, the college's robust football team gained fame for defeating prominent teams like Baylor, LSU, Rice, SMU, and Texas A & M. The music department too had a choir, formed in 1941, that toured nationally and internationally. The satellite campus, Dodd College, acquired in 1942, served air force cadets as a pre-flight training facility during the Second World War.
After the war, a wave of construction followed, birthing to new dormitories, a cafeteria, a religious education center, a chapel, a student center, a library, a theater, and a music building, giving the campus a renewed look and feel.
Today, the Centenary College of Louisiana stands proud, gracefully carrying forward the legacy initiated by the two prolific institutions - the College of Louisiana and Centenary College. With the historical site in Jackson remaining a testament to its rich heritage and the Shreveport campus thriving with life and learning, the college continues to enlighten future generations, while strongly holding onto its remarkable past.
