History John Brown University

John E. Brown's compelling story begins when he was 11, born into a financially struggling family in 1879, that couldn't afford to give him much education. However, he was destined to lead a life of intellectual and spiritual journey that left an enduring legacy in education. While his early teenage years were fraught with laborious tasks in Arkansas, a serendipitous meeting with the Salvation Army led to a powerful conversion experience.

As a reformed man, Brown segued into a Methodist evangelist; an occupation that allowed him to explore the territories of Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, and Indian Territory. His journey as an evangelist eventually led him to accept the presidency of Scarritt College in Neosho, marking the beginning of his educational endeavors. His stint at Scarritt College, however, made him question the worth of education that lacked practical life skills. A vision started taking shape in his mind. He wanted to establish a school that would equip students with not just bookish knowledge, but also practical life lessons.

In 1919, the foundation was laid for Brown's ambitious vision, an institution that was later christened "John E. Brown College" or "John Brown University". You see, Brown was determined to create an interdenominational Christian college that would cater to the needy students whose life mirrored his own. His school wasn't just about imparting knowledge, he wanted his students to work and acquire valuable skills. Hence, the inception of his Christian vocational college where students learnt the art of carpentry and other skills as they aided in the construction of uni buildings. Their typical day comprised four hours of labor aside from their class time.

The year 1934 marked a critical turning point for the college as Brown announced his decision to elevate it into a full-fledged four-year university, divided into three colleges: academic, vocational, and Bible. This represented Brown's vision to create a holistic educational environment, where "head, heart, and hand" are equally nurtured. What's more, he also pioneered into the realm of technology by purchasing a local radio station for broadcasting Christian programs and his own sermons.

However, with the university's increasing reach and growth, financial strains began to emerge. Campus expenses nudged the institution to start charging tuition from 1939. Though the fees were quite meager, it signalled that the vocational engagement, that was a mainstay of Brown's educational vision, proved to be more expensive than he had expected.

While dealing with these challenges, Brown continued to be an influential voice of Christianity across the country, and with his words reached millions via radio broadcasts. His intense critique on liquor, gambling, dancing, and such vices bracing the Christian fundamentalist issues of his time earned him an honorary doctorate from Bob Jones University in 1937.

The 1940s ushered in a dramatic turn of events for JBU. What was once a bedrock of Christian Fundamentalism started distancing itself from this very movement. Despite associating with evangelical organizations like "Youth for Christ" post World War II, Brown maintained his preference for interdenominationalism. This policy shift marked a seminal moment in the university's history, leading to a subsequent period of consolidation from 1948 under John Brown Jr.

With a shrinking student body due to World War II and leadership dominated by the Brown family, John Brown Jr’s tenure was focused on institutional growth and diversification. The university's faculty and leadership expanded beyond the family, the board of trustees gained independence, and the academic environment received a much-needed intellectual stimulus from new professors with advanced degrees. Also, for the first time, they started a massive construction project for its Cathedral Group – symbolic of their ethos of educating “head, heart, and hand”- adding the Cathedral of the Ozarks, Science building, and the Library to its campus.

During the 1960s, under Brown Jr's vision, the university evolved, reflecting the changing needs of the workforce. The vocational college was abolished and the focus shifted to practical career training as part of every department’s curriculum. It was during this tenure that JBU, after several reforms and adjustments, finally received national accreditation from the North Central Association.

The Vietnam War and the peace movement left many universities in a state of chaos, but not JBU. The university stood with its Americanist vision of the world, merging American patriotism and political conservatism with its conservative Christian faith. However, the 70s came with an array of challenges for JBU, including low academic standards and banal curriculum. It was at this point that the university turned to the enlightened insights of Elton Trueblood, professor of philosophy at Earlham College, who advocated the supremacy of liberal arts over career preparation.

Having spearheaded numerous reforms, Brown Jr. passed the presidential baton to his son, John Brown III, who maintained the legacy of ensuring the integration of acad
