A group of dedicated men, led by the calling of their faith, committed their efforts and resources to transform their common dream into a tangible reality. Men, who hailed from the gentle cornfields of Iowa, the majestic Black Hills of South Dakota, and the serene lakes of Minnesota, united under the flag of the Christian Reformed Churches to lay down a sound foundation.
Sioux Center – a humbly gorgeous town - was chosen as the heart of this educational endeavour; and so it was, our journey began as Midwest Christian Junior College. The excitement was palpable in the air even as the college welcomed its first class in the autumn of 1955. Imagine a group of about 40 eager faces, walking into their classrooms, embarking on an adventure of learning and growth.
1956 marked a significant transition in our story. Our institution transformed, shedding its old name to embrace a new identity - Dordt College. You might wonder, why Dordt? The name pays tribute to a significant event in the history of the reformed church – the Synod of Dordt. This significant meeting echoes from the annals of the 17th century, casting a long shadow from the Netherlands of 1618-1619, straight into the heart of our institution.
Year by year, Dordt College blossomed, with its first graduating class basking in the joy of achievement in 1957. Eighteen individuals, each with their unique dreams and ambitions, were the first to fruitfully culminate their academic journey. They commenced a tradition of excellence that still echoes within the walls of our institution.
And the success didn't stop there. Come 1965, Dordt College proudly saw its first batch of students earning their B.A. degrees. This added a significant milestone to Dordt's ever-evolving journey.
