The adventure of Augustana University started back in 1835 with the vision of Scandinavian immigrants. Carrying dreams of a brighter future, they founded the Hillsboro Academy in the heart of Illinois, USA. This humble beginning is where the seed of Augustana was first planted.
As the years rolled by and the academy grew, change was inevitable. In 1846, the accommodating place of knowledge transformed into the Literary and Theological Institute of the Lutheran Church of the Far West. However, the academy wasn't destined to stay put. It soon made its way to Springfield, taking on an impressive new identity as Illinois State University.
Not satisfied with the status quo, church leaders rolled their sleeves up in 1860. They gave birth to the Scandinavian Evangelical Lutheran Augustana Synod, a move that would change the course of future. Now with Professor Lars Paul Esbjörn and his determined group on board, they headed to Chicago. Their mission? To create their own unique educational institution. What was born from this vision and hard work? The Augustana College and Seminary; a stepping stone that would propel us into the future known today as Augustana University.
In the wake of the American Civil War, as the United States burgeoned westwards, Augustana boldly followed like pioneers. In 1863, the college was whisked away to Paxton, Illinois. However, a division soon emerged within the leadership. The Norwegian faction yearned to establish their own school, leading them to set roots in Marshall, Wisconsin, in 1869. Meanwhile, the Swedes sought greener pastures in Rock Island, Illinois, giving birth to what we now know as the Augustana College, Illinois. The Marshall-based school further explored its path, moving to Beloit, Iowa, in 1881, then landing at Canton, South Dakota, in 1888.
The year 1889 was monumental. It saw the inauguration of the Lutheran Normal School in Sioux Falls. Initially, it shone as a beacon of wisdom amidst the backdrop of Old Main, igniting young minds to become teachers. As the early 20th century dawned, city leaders and business moguls joined forces. They persuaded Augustana to set roots in Sioux Falls, resulting in a historic merger in 1918. The Lutheran Normal School and Augustana College in Canton blended to form the unified Augustana College and Normal School.
Fast forward to 1926, and "Normal School" was ceremoniously trimmed from our name, leaving behind the famous Augustana College. The Canton location transformed into Augustana Academy, operating independently till 1971, despite its identical moniker. Celebrations were in full swing in 2010–11 as Augustana University marked 150 incredible years of academic excellence.
The name 'Augustana' holds a significant spiritual symbolism, intricately tied to the roots of Lutheran Church traced back to the Augsburg Confession of 1530. It is an ode to the Protestant Reformation, with "Augustana" derived from the Latin name of this pivotal movement, "Confessio Augustana".
A monumental announcement on August 21, 2015 took everyone by surprise.
