History Seton Hall University

Let's travel back to 1844, in the state of Maryland, USA, where many Catholic universities were blossoming. One such spark was ignited in the Council of Baltimore, a meeting that resulted in the creation of Seton Hall. Their mission? To infuse higher education with Catholicism and spread its principles. Can you guess who was behind the wheels? It was none other than Pope Pius IX! Just three years ahead of Seton Hall's formal establishment, in 1853, he created the Diocese of Newark.

On a sunny day of September 1, 1856, Seton Hall opened its doors. The architect of this prestigious institution was Newark Bishop James Roosevelt Bayley, who just happened to share a bloodline with Franklin Roosevelt's father, James Roosevelt I. Being a family man, Bayley dedicated his great work to his aunt, Mother Elizabeth Ann Seton, a saint revered for being the first American-born Catholic saint.

The early years of Seton Hall weren't filled with thousands of students bustling on the campus. Instead, it started with only five pupils in Madison, New Jersey. But can you believe that the student body swelled to a whopping 60 by the end of the first year. And what's more awe-inspiring? Seton Hall shifted base to its current whereabouts just four years later!

Life wasn't always rosy at Seton Hall. In the 1860s, the institution had to face the wrath of nature. Strikes of devastating fires on campus arrested its remarkable pace of growth. From dealing with the first fire in 1867 that ravaged the college's first building to coping with the fiery inferno in 1886 and 1909, Seton Hall braved it all.

Despite being beleaguered by fire incidents, financial hardships, and the American Civil War, Seton Hall's spirit lived on. It opened arms for a military science department in the scorching summer of 1893. While wartime demands led to its disbandment, the college still stands honored for its service to the nation.

If you thought this was the only memorable chapter of Seton Hall's history, well, you'd be wrong. There's the gleeful day in the summer of 1937 when Seton Hall let women echo in University College. The outcome? Seton Hall turned fully coeducational in 1968.

Fast forward to the modern era, Seton Hall thrived, transforming itself into a technology-adorned, distance-learning champion. But not all was smooth in its journey; it went through ups and downs. On one hand, Seton Hall met its 150th anniversary in 2006 with the successful "Ever Forward" campaign, raising a staggering $150 million. On the other, it grappled with a significant embezzlement scandal, resulting in administrative reshuffles.

But, the university proved itself to be a phoenix, rising from its ashes, continually renewing and revitalizing. It welcomed new academic units like the School of Medicine and the College of Communication and the Arts in 2015. Exciting times await Seton Hall, which is all poised for more expansion in 2016 and beyond. So, if you're an ardent specimen of academia, buckle up and get ready for a stimulating ride at Seton Hall University.
