A group of visionary men inked down the foundation of the South Carolina College, destiny had other plans and it morphed into the University of South Carolina, isn't that cool?
As we trace back to the nascent years, in 1824, there were 78 students and a faculty of four. Can you imagine the student-teacher ratio then? It was as personalized as education could get! The first four years proved immensely fruitful because of the rigorous curriculum and an unbeatable passion for grooming leaders.
Then came the historic year of 1862, when the Civil War took its toll on the whole nation, and colleges, well they weren't exempted, you know! The institute closed its doors to students, but the blaze of passion didn't burn out. It was a break but not the end, a bit like your school summer vacations.
Rebirth occurred in 1865, as phoenix rises from its ashes, the institution resurrected and became the first in the entire state to admit African-American students. Talk about being inclusive right from the start, and making the right noise in a world full of chaos. It was this spirit that led the institute from South Carolina College to University of South Carolina in 1865.
