Imagine this - it’s the year 1881, the Dakota College, a predecessor of Black Hills State University (BHSU), just began to radiate the light of knowledge. But it was only a stepping stone. The real foundation of what we know as BHSU was begun in 1883. John Mauer, a man who foresaw the importance of education, put up some land for sale. It wasn’t long before Joseph Ramsdell, with the help of diligent donors, purchased it for a cosy sum of $790.85.
Meanwhile, kindred spirits like John Wolzmuth, Frank J. Washabaugh, and E.M. Bowman rallied to collect funds for the upcoming school. Thanks to the Dakota Territorial Legislature, by late 1883, a temporary building was up and running under the banner of Dakota Territorial Normal School. Van Buren Baker, the pioneer administrator and teacher, opened the school's doors on April 14, 1884. However, the initial journey was not smooth; economic difficulties led Baker to leave by December of the same year.
But good times were just around the corner. By 1885, under the remarkable leadership of Fayette Cook, the school came alive again. Did you know this school, up and running, attracted 70 students? These young minds were exposed to academic rigour that spanned across high school and a little beyond. Eventually, in 1887, the Normal School Main Building was constructed – a monument that stood tall until 1925.
Progress was steady, if not swift. By 1924, the school had the authority to launch a full-fledged four-year curriculum. This opened doors for the students to earn a Bachelor of Science in Education degree. BHSU didn’t stop there; they played a crucial role during the unsettling times of World War II. In response to the war, BHSU rolled out a 12-week civil aeronautics course. It was a massive success - 44 students graduated in the very first year, with most of them setting off to serve in the military.
Years passed and the college flourished under the moniker ‘Teachers College’. The year 1941 saw the official transition from a normal school to the Black Hills Teachers College. A new era began under the presidency of Russel E. Jonas in 1942. During his influential 25-year tenure, the campus underwent significant transformation with the addition of new dormitories, library, and a three-story classroom building.
Now here comes the real game-changer. On July 1, 1964, in recognition of the expanding educational endeavours, the college was rechristened as the Black Hills State College. The Vietnam War saw its student demographic shoot up to 2000 in the academic year of 1968-69. While there were those who chose the path of academia over warfare, others voiced their opposition to the war. The year 1969 witnessed student-led protests against the war on the Black Hills State College campus.
The 1970s brought new changes, most notably the opening of the new library, art gallery and museum exhibits in 1973. Despite the humble beginnings, the college by now had a bustling student community and a thriving campus life. Yet, challenges on the administrative front were an ongoing battle. Richard Gibb of the South Dakota higher education commission proposed converting BHSU into a junior college under a larger university system. This move was met with stout resistance from the legislative branch of Spearfish and BHSU president Meredith Freeman. They believed in the growing need for BHSU to be an independent four-year university. While the Board of Regents ruled to remain a four-year college, the master's program was withdrawn.
And then, one fine day, on July 1, 1989, BHSU broke free of its collegiate roots and ascended to the ranks of a full-fledged university - the Black Hills State University. The 90s and 2000s saw the campus bloom with student housing for married couples, sports centres, and expansions to student union buildings. Campus beautification and a new residence for the university's president were some delightful additions in the new millennium. October 2022 marked a milestone with the completion of an extensive revamp of E.Y. Berry Library.
Dr. Laurie S. Nichols rose to the helm of BHSU in December 2019, accepting the mantle as the 11th President. Today, as you might walk down the hallowed corridors of BHSU, take a moment to remember its journey, carved by visionary leaders and shared by countless learners over the years.
