Gonzaga University, you ask? Step back to 1887, a significant year when an Italian-American named Joseph Cataldo poured out his dream onto American soil. Having arrived in 1865 as a Jesuit missionary, Cataldo’s passion for educating the Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest was about to take physical shape.
In the 1880s, he had already ventured 10 to12 miles northeast of Spokane, etching out a humble schoolhouse in the expansive Peone Prairie to benefit the Upper Spokane Indians. It became quickly apparent to him that Protestant schools were swelling their influence over the natives, and by 1881, the prospect of a Jesuit college blossomed into a full-blown discussion.
Locating a perfect spot in Spokane Falls which was later rechristened Spokane, its central place in the Washington, Idaho and Montana region worked in favour of the Jesuits who eyed an extensive reach. And so, 320 acres of prized real estate in the city's commercial hub was snagged for a bargain price of $936, thanks to the persuasive skills of Cataldo that swayed John W. Sprague, the Northern Pacific Railway executive.
Interesting, you say? Brace yourselves as the tale continues. Despite Spokane City's offer to fund the new college, there was a clause that it be an exclusive school for whites. Eyebrows raised? Cataldo, despite having dreamed of educating the local natives, had to swallow a bitter pill. To prevent Methodists and Protestants from pocketing the funds, stakes were high, and the school construction began in earnest in 1886.
Can you even imagine the dawn of 1887? The school burst into life under the watchful gaze of Father James Rebmann, the first Father Superior, with a total of seven boys forming the inaugural batch. A team of 17 faculty members, chock-full of Jesuit priests and Jesuits in training, were ready to mold the students into fine young men. The first year's roller-coaster ride saw more enrolments, a couple of expulsions, and finished with a total strength of 18 all-white boys.
True, the times were different. Students, mostly non-Catholics and offenders of rules, faced the music regularly, some even getting expelled. Imagine waking up as early as 5:30 AM and not retiring till the lights went out at 8:30 PM, with only Mass breaks and notoriously tough advancement examinations punctuating the hard grind. Don't be surprised if I told you students withdrew just out of pure exam stress!
Let me decode the school's early structure for you. The school split into three tiers: a lower section catering to young boys, a mid-tier “Academic section” and an upper division similar to a liberal arts college. Fascinating, isn't it? Late 1890s saw the initiation of the four-story structure, and 1899 witnessed the birth of the New Gonzaga.
Mill around the compound in your mind's eye, and you will see a dazzling game of "college-down", an early version of football that had just debuted in 1892. That very year, a new dormitory and a wooden St. Aloysius Church took shape, and imagine the thrill of the campus getting illuminated by electric power for the first time.
But as every coin has two sides, Gonzaga too is not without its blemishes. In 2018, it surfaced that the Cardinal Bea House, a property owned by the Jesuit Order, and located adjacent to Gonzaga's campus, was secretly housing sexually abusive priests from the 1970s till 2016.
The shock echoed the sentiments of many when it was revealed that Thayne McCulloh, Gonzaga's President, claimed to be oblivious to this fact before and during his tenure. Shocking, isn't it?
The humble yet resolute origins, the tireless journey, and the poignant side stories make the saga of Gonzaga University nothing short of an epic. Its lores continue to reverberate across the Pacific Northwest, reminding us of the timeless values it was built upon, the complexities of running an institution of such magnitude, and, not least, the inexorable tide of time. Engaging enough? Remember, learning is fun when it encapsulates stories like these. So, isn’t it time you added your chapter to this dynamic narrative?
