On September 1, 1955, a journey marked by faith and education embarked its maiden voyage. This path was chartered by the General Council of the Assemblies of God, who set the cornerstone for the establishment of Evangel College. You might be wondering why was Evangel College created? The idea behind it was to provide a platform where students with interests in non-religious fields could study and excel, surrounded by the warmth and guidance of a Pentecostal, faith-based environment.
In the leadership of the venerable Rev. Ralph Riggs, the assembly already had many Bible schools under its shade. However, their vision wasn't confined, and they decided to make a bold step. Hence, Evangel College, the first national Pentecostal school of arts and sciences, was born, paving a new way for students.
The college had its humble beginnings within the structure of the erstwhile O'Reilly General Hospital. Now, here's a fun bit of trivia for you. During World War II, O'Reilly wasn't just any hospital. It was a beacon of solace, set up by the U.S. Army, that extended medical care to over 100,000 patients in just five years! Post-war, it briefly turned into a veteran's hospital before lapsing into an 'excess property' label accorded by the Army.
In December 1954, the Assemblies of God acquired the property. This was not merely a transaction but a significant stepping stone for Evangel College. With the commencement of classes on September 1, 1955, Evangel College sprang to life. The embers stoked, the dreams aflame, we started our journey with a modest assembly of 87 students.
Can you imagine living and attending classes in erstwhile Army barracks? This was the reality for early Evangel students. In 1963, the first permanent structure, the Klaude Kendrick Library, took shape on the campus. Over the years, these vestiges of the past gradually gave way to modern, lasting buildings. The final remnants of the old Army barrack bid adieu in 2009, signifying the end of an era.
Come 2010, the trumpets of change began to blow once more. The Assemblies of God initiated an ambitious consolidation plan. The plan aimed to merge Evangel University with Central Bible College and Assemblies of God Theological Seminary, which were all situated in Springfield, Missouri. A significant stride down that path was made at the Assembly of God’s 2011 General Council in Phoenix, Arizona, which saw the passing of the consolidation resolution.
Following the council's mandate, efforts took on full steam to formulate a formal proposal for presentation to the Higher Learning Commission. The Commission’s approval arrived in April 2013, paving the way for the new Evangel University to officially launch in August 2013.
As we revelled in this significant milestone, another announcement emerged. Carol Taylor, an alumnus of Evangel University and the Assembly of God Theological Seminary, and then the president of Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, CA, was chosen to steer the consolidated university. Carol Taylor's alumni status substantiates how Evangel University nurtures its students towards remarkable expertise and leadership roles. Our current helmsman, Mike Rakes, took charge in 2021, continuing to provide dynamic guidance for Evangel University.
