Once upon a time, on the 17th day of March, in the year of 1905, Missouri State University was born but then it was known as the Fourth District Normal School. Born out of legislative necessity, the primary purpose of this educational institution was to prepare future educators, a noble aim even in those early times. Its doors were thrown open to the world on the 11th of June, 1906, welcoming a sizeable crowd of 543 eager young minds.
Here's a fun fact for you - the first permanent building on its campus came to be known as the Academic Hall, with the cornerstone laid on August 10, 1907. Standing tall and complete in January 1909, it was eventually renamed "Carrington Hall," in honour of William T. Carrington, the very first president of the State Normal School. Today, it serves as the heartbeat of the university’s administrative proceedings.
The school, noticing the winds of change and the needs of its community, evolved into Southwest Missouri State Teacher's College in 1919, reflecting a wider academic canvas and strategic regional aspirations. Fast forward to the post-war period, the college's programs began to include liberal arts and sciences, prompting a name-change to Southwest Missouri State College in 1945. A growing student population through the 50s and 60s birthed new residence halls and an expansion in post-graduate studies.
Did you know that this led to yet another name change? In 1972, it became Southwest Missouri State University. And a year later, the university broke the 10,000-student mark for the first time. Fast forward to 1985, it matured into the second-largest public university in the state. Despite ambitious attempts to change the name to Missouri State University, this kept hitting legislative roadblocks.
You might be curious about how and when the change finally occurred. Well, following the election of Matt Blunt, a Springfield native, to the governorship in 2004, fresh support for renaming the university bloomed. A hard-fought compromise between University of Missouri System President Elson Floyd and Southwest Missouri State President John Keiser was forged, ensuring certain professional programs would not be duplicated. The much-awaited name change was signed into law on the centennial anniversary of the university, on March 17, 2005.
In 2006, the university made the notable decision to include sexual orientation in its non-discrimination policy, laying the groundwork for a more inclusive and accepting campus culture. This move, however, was not devoid of controversy, although ultimately it prevailed.
Shifting our gaze to 2011, the university’s executive MBA program for students in China sparked a conversation around alleged financial irregularities. It was questioned if students were paying more than what MSU received through its Hong Kong-based agent. University officials, however, maintained that the program was an efficient way to grow and attract students overseas without using university resources.
Here's a juicy tidbit traditionalists would love. Do you know the university fight song? Adopted in the 1960's, "The Scotsman" is belted out at every home football touchdown, making athletic events always exuberant. And, the traditional alumni song is brimming with sentiment, performed at each graduation ceremony and occasionally at athletic events and other ceremonies.
The university tradition also holds some quaint facets. Ever wondered about the school’s iconic maroon and white colors or the Bear mascot? Look no further than the formative years of 1906, when a committee of faculty and students took the design inspiration from the state seal of Missouri! Today, these symbols take center stage on the school seal, reflecting the legacy and unity of the Missouri State University community.
And so, dear reader, from its humble beginnings in 1905 to its ever-evolving present, Missouri State University stands as a testament to the journey of learning, the courage to adapt, and the power of unity and inclusivity in education. Here's to another century of growth and metamorphosis!
