In the year 1845, in the heart of Ohio, a group of visionary ministers belonging to the English Evangelical Lutheran Synod made a historic decision that would forever change the course of education. Taking a leaf from the storied University of Wittenberg in Germany, the birthplace of Martin Luther's transformative Ninety-five Theses, they laid the foundation stone for the Wittenberg College.
The seed for this great initiative was sown by none other than the Rev. Ezra Keller, a faithful servant of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. As the key founder and inaugural president, his dream aimed at offering clergy training via the Hamma School of Divinity. Wittenberg's innovative approach was its mission to "Americanize" Lutherans, by switching gears from German language instructions to English – quite a switch from the trend Capital University in Columbus, Ohio was following.
The university's educational pursuit began in Springfield, Ohio. The eight pioneering students transformed into a promising batch of seventy-one by year end. With nothing more than a single professor and a pair of tutors, the journey began in a charming church, standing regally on donated land. The choice of Springfield was strategic, thanks to its prime location on the National Road, bridging the east and west.
As the years rolled on, the institution began to open its doors wider. The year 1874 saw the inclusion of women, and a year later, Wittenberg warmly embraced black students. The college rose to university status in 1957, reflecting in its new name. By 1993, the bond between the university and its namesake town became official.
The journey was not without bumps, however. In 1995, the American Philosophical Association reproached Wittenberg University, siding with a faculty member denied tenure. As recently as in 2021, it faced another reprimand, this time from the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), for closing down eight academic programs and dismissing two tenured faculty members.
Among its many eventful moments, one that stands out was when Luther Alexander Gotwald, Theology Professor at the Hamma Divinity School, walked free after a two-day trial on charges of heresy that was held on April 4-5, 1893 by the board of directors. The issues brought to the forefront during the trial continue to be a bone of contention among Evangelical Lutherans even today.
Through thick and thin, Wittenberg has remained closely linked to the local, English-speaking regional Lutheran synods in the Midwest for many years. In 1978, the Hamma Divinity School joined hands with the Evangelical Lutheran Theological Seminary (part of Capital University) to form Trinity Lutheran Seminary.
It's been quite a journey for Wittenberg University, and it continues to move forward, dedicated to its commitment to education, equality, and integrity. It's a place where history meets the present, knowledge meets ambition, and dreams meet reality. For all you aspiring learners, Wittenberg is a beacon of knowledge guiding you towards a bright future.
