Once upon a wonderful time, back in 1911, the stork, as we like to say, delivered Dixie State University into the world. In fact, it's quite the interesting story and not like any ole tale of university beginnings you might have heard.
You see, it was in sunny St. George, Utah, a charming little locale surrounded by sandstone nirvanas, where this seed of an institution called Dixie Normal School first sprouted. To open its doors, it needed students, of course, right? Yes indeed, this is where an imaginative chap named Hugh M. Woodward enters our tale. As superintendent, in just his second year, he roped in a slick 36 'pupils', as they called them back in the day, all ready to hit the books lickety split.
By the year 1916, you could say our dear school was growing like a beanstalk in spring— boasting over 100 students. But wait, it got better - it was also blooming into a junior college at this point. Did I mention this was when women first took the reins in educational leadership? Mm hmm, it was Principal Maude Cox, the first woman principal in Utah, who led the institution to its dizzying new heights. Now, isn't that something!
In 1923, the institution changed its pants again, deciding to evolve into Dixie Junior College. This came along with a brand spanking new campus (how about that!), nestled right at the heart of St. George.
1957 shone bright in our story, as the unflinching commitement and ceaseless hard work saw our beloved Dixie transition into a four-year institution, now called Dixie College. And, just like a batch of Samosa's in a party, it was consumed enthusiastically!
