Once upon a time in 1923, a women's college took its first bold step into the world, christened Fontbonne College. Named after Mother St. John Fontbonne, a woman of great resilience and courage, who bravely refounded the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph (CSJ) in 1808, after the turmoil of the French Revolution had dispersed the community.
Flashback to the genesis of the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1650, in LePuy, France, a community that continued its journey even as its members were forced to return to their homes amidst the French Revolution. Fast forward to 1836, some 28 years after the community's resurgence, six Sisters of St. Joseph ventured over the sea to establish their American roots at Carondelet, a small community in south St. Louis, Missouri within the Archdiocese of St. Louis. By 1841, just five years later, the Sisters had opened St. Joseph's Academy for girls.
The aftermath of World War I sparked the conception of Carondelet College where the first classes commenced. The year was 1927, marks were awarded to eight deserving students and the institution continued to grow, necessitating a new campus. Over the next two decades, a liberal arts curriculum took shape at the university, with additional buildings growing around the core campus, previously home to Ryan Hall, Science Building, and the Fine Arts Building. Amongst the new structures was Medaille Hall, the university's first residence hall and accreditation and degree-granting powers bestowed, illuminating the journey further.
The 1950s saw the expansion of the Department of Education into arenas of special education, tailored to cater to a spectrum of learning and behavioural disorders, and mental disabilities. The establishment of a major in deaf education tugged an important tie with St. Joseph's Institute for the Deaf, leading to the development of a Department for Communication Disorders. However, as the sun set on the 1950s, a lack of space made the university relocate its high school section to the suburb of Frontenac and undergo a name change to "Fontbonne College".
A new decade dawned in the 1970s and with it came a crucial change - Fontbonne College fleetly evolved into a co-educational institution. Service programs were expanded to meet the need of the hour, specialising in dietetics, special education, communication disorders and deaf education. The first male president, Dr. Dennis C. Golden, took his inaugural walk through the halls in September 1995, and while the institution celebrated its 75th anniversary, a shift in status from Fontbonne College to Fontbonne University happened in March 2002.
As we tiptoe into 2014, we find J. Michael (Mike) Pressimone, Ed.D., being selected the 14th president of the University. He assumed office on July 1, 2014. In a land expansion exercise in 2017, the university took over 23 acres of former JFK High School's property, investing in a larger training ground for student-athletes and an opportunity to further adult education. However, by 2020, the former JFK High School property was up for grabs as the University decided to concentrate on enhancing its main campus.
As Nancy Blattner assumed the esteemed position of the 15th president of Fontbonne University in 2020, she was no stranger to the institution. She had a run as the University's Vice President of Academic Affairs from 2004 to 2009 and served as the president of Caldwell University in the interim. However, managing the university's affairs amidst a drop in enrollment from 2,293 students in 2011 to 955 in 2021 was a challenge. Unfortunately, the University had been functioning at a deficit for a decade.
It was in November 2023 that the darkness deepened with student enrollment dropping to 874 and the university facing a deficit of $5.2 million. Speculations were rife about the University dipping into its endowment to stay operational and meet payroll obligations, while College Viability cautioned against long-term viability for the university. And thus, the journey of Fontbonne continues awaiting a brighter dawn on its horizon.
