History Washington University

In the budding year of 1854, the suggestion to erect a university in Washington Territory first echoed in the chambers of governmental discourse, by no other than Isaac Stevens, the territorial governor himself. Notably, Daniel Bagley, a preacher with Methodist leanings, was among the key figures in Seattle who embraced this proposition with enthusiasm, seeing the immense potential it could add to the city's charm and appeal.

Bagley, who had come to learn about a law enabling US territories to trade land for raising funds in favor of public schools, seized this opportunity. He locked horns with Arthur A. Denny, one of Seattle's founders and a territorial legislature member who desired to amplify the city's prominence by transferring the capital of the territory from Olympia to Seattle. However, Bagley craftily persuaded Denny that the birth of a university would contribute far more significantly to Seattle's progress.

As the 1861 dawned, a vigorous hunt was initiated for an apt 10-acre site in Seattle which would cradle the forthcoming university campus. Eight of the required acres were generously donated by Arthur and Mary Denny while Edward Lander and Charlie and Mary Terry, pioneers in their own right, contributed the remaining two acres located on Denny's Knoll, downtown Seattle. This promising tract was encircled by 4th Avenue on the west, 6th Avenue to the east, Union Street up north, and Seneca Streets to the south.

Fast-forward to November 4, 1861, the Territorial University of Washington, brilliantly conceived by the university's architect and builder – the architect behind the very name of Pike Street – John Pike, swung open its doors to students. Today, the only surviving remnants from Washington's first building are four imposing, white, hand-fluted cedar Ionic columns standing tall at 24 feet. These columns, salvaged by one of the university's first graduates and a former history department head, Edmond S. Meany, are proudly displayed in the Sylvan Grove Theater, a symbol of the university's humble beginnings.

Navigating through the tides of time between 1958 to 1973, UW experienced an exhilarating growth phase under the dynamic stewardship of Charles Odegaard. The university's operating budget rocketed from $37 million to over $400 million and student enrollment more than doubled from its previous count, as the baby boom generation advanced to the age of pursuing university education. It was during this extraordinary period that the politics of institution was critically debated, leading to what Henry Schmitz, the University's president, coined as "an internal power struggle".

Fast forward to June 14, 2023, the university found itself mired in a controversy. About 2,400 postdocs and researchers at the UW took a bold step, resorting to a series of strikes over unresolved contract negotiations concerning pay, support for child care, and provisions guarding against sexual harassment. In an unanticipated move, the U.S. Secretary of Education, Miguel Cardona, withdrew from delivering his scheduled commencement speech on June 10, extending his solidarity to the striking workforce.

Despite the accusations and allegations, the impasse lingered on until June 16, when a new contract was proposed. This promised an encouraging increase in worker pay and improved working conditions for the union members. Under the negotiated contract, Postdoctorate Scholars will observe an increase of 28% in their pay by January 1, 2024.

In summary, the journey of the University of a Washington is one that is filled with interesting anecdotes, challenges and victories. It holds a mirror to the perseverance, intellect and courage of those who made the university what it is today. It continues to evolve, nurturing new generations of scholars and leaders. This enduring tale of growth and evolution embodies the spirit of hard work and dedication inherent in the pursuit of education and knowledge. It also underlines the essential role of educational institutions in shaping societies and driving economic development.
