Imagine it's 1905, and nestled atop the city's second highest hill in St. Paul, in what is today known as Highland Park, a college is taking the first breath of its existence. The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, driven by the inspiring leadership of Mother Seraphine Ireland, founded a university that would soon become a beacon of faith and education. Welcome to the journey of St. Catherine's University, named in honor of St. Catherine of Alexandria, a fourth-century Egyptian philosopher who braved martyrdom for her faith.
At inception, the first building erected, Derham Hall, was largely financed by a generous donation of $20,000 by Hugh Derham of Rosemount. Opened in January 1905, the Hall accommodated both high school boarding students and lower-division college students, housing a variety of courses and an atmosphere ripe with youthful academia.
By the academic year of 1911–12, the college had started offering upper-division courses, and in the spring of 1913, the first duo of Bachelor of Arts students ended their four-year academic journey. The milestone was celebrated, as 1917 marked another significant achievement for the college - full accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
Then came the crucial times of World War II. As the world battled, St. Kate’s extended its educational services to meet the pressing need of the hour. The university broadened its academic umbrella to include a baccalaureate degree in nursing, responding to a severe nursing shortage. It extended support to military hospitals, with more than 170 St. Catherine alumnae rendering their service between 1942 and 1948. They partnered with St. Joseph's and St. Mary's hospitals and schools of nursing and formed a fruitful alliance with the U.S. Cadet Nursing Corps.
Enter the 70s, and students from St. Kate’s often found themselves attending classes at the neighboring University of St. Thomas, a men's college at the time.
Fast forward a few decades, St. Catherine's sported an impressive St. Paul Campus with most day, evening, and weekend programs held in the charming Highland Park neighborhood. The co-educational Minneapolis campus offered associate degree and certificate programs in a myriad of healthcare fields. Tracing these healthcare courses back to 1887, the Sisters of St. Joseph had responded eagerly to the region's demand for skilled nurses, initiating the St. Mary's School of Nursing in Minneapolis.
The university even ventured into the establishment of the first occupational therapy assistant program and the first physical therapist assistant program in the United States! Thus, the innovative spirit embodied by the university remained not just in its name but also in its actions as it went on to acquire St. Mary's Junior College in 1985. Subsequently, Fairview Hospital and St. Mary's Hospital united to form Riverside Medical Center, further broadening the scope of St. Kate's healthcare education offerings.
The year 2009 brought upon another key milestone - the College of St. Catherine embraced a new identity as St. Catherine University. As part of its remarkable journey, St. Catherine's University has witnessed the strong leadership of eleven presidents at the helm.
As we journey through its rich history, let’s not forget that two of its most iconic structures, Derham Hall and Our Lady of Victory Chapel, are co-listed on the National Register of Historic Places, a testimony to their enduring architectural splendor and historical significance.
And this is not just a history, it’s a legacy that St. Catherine University carries forward - of unwavering faith, unabridged knowledge, and relentless pursuit of excellence in education.
