Once upon a time, back in 1883, the roots of Wagner College took hold in Rochester, New York. It started out as the Lutheran Proseminary of Rochester, a noble endeavour to educate young men with the intention to make them suitable for admission to Lutheran seminaries. The school also served a unique purpose, to help these young men master both German and English languages, a necessary juggle to minister to the prominent German immigrant community of that era.
At its core was a six-year curriculum - detailed, comprehensive, laid much like the German gymnasium curriculum. Only three years after its inception, the honourable school underwent a name change, rechristened as the Wagner Memorial Lutheran College. The school owed its new identity to John G. Wagner who purchased a building in Rochester for the school to honour his son.
1918 witnessed a significant turning point in the college's history. Its hub was shifted to Grymes Hill, Staten Island, spanning a 38-acre expanse of the former Cunard estate. Yes, that includes Westwood, the Italianate villa also known as the Cunard mansion, still intact and a relic of 1851. Let's not forget the former hotel annex built in 1905, originally christened North Hall but now goes by the name Reynolds House.
That was not all. The college ambitiously expanded to a larger 57-acre area upon acquiring the adjacent Jacob Vanderbilt estate in 1922. It was during the progressive 1920s when Wagner College's focused shifted towards an American-style liberal arts curriculum. This change turned pivotal when New York state bestowed the college with degree-granting status in 1928.
In 1933, the college turned coeducational, inviting women to become part of its scholastic journey. The terrain of academics at Wagner broadened in 1951, with the introduction of graduate programs. The 1949 acquisition of the W.G. Ward estate, now the Wagner College Stadium, marked another expansion.
The college took one more giant stride in 1993 when it obtained the neighbouring property of the erstwhile Augustinian Academy. Maintained as verdant green space and athletic fields, this purchase broadened Wagner College's expanse to a breathtaking 105 acres. Today, it proudly stands, a testament to its rich history, overlooking the New York Harbor, the Verrazzano Bridge, Downtown Brooklyn, and Lower Manhattan.
