History Mary Baldwin University

Consider a picturesque valley in Staunton, Virginia, the tranquil setting of Augusta County. In this historic location in 1842, Rufus William Bailey planted the first seeds of an institution of learning, originally known as the Augusta Female Seminary. This humble initiative was the genesis of what you now recognize as Mary Baldwin University.

It's inspirational to recount that among the earliest pupils was Mary Julia Baldwin herself. She went on to hold the fort as the principal in the tumultuous year of 1863. Amidst the chaos of the Civil War and residual economic hardships, many surrounding educational institutions shut their doors. But Baldwin's unwavering resolve meant that the seminary remained unaffected.

A worthy tribute was made to Mary Baldwin's commitment to education in 1895 - the Augusta Seminary was rechristened as Mary Baldwin Seminary. The entity transformed into a four-year institution in 1923, with the name adapting once more to Mary Baldwin College.

In the new age dawn of 1963, Mary Baldwin initiated a historically significant epoch of racial desegregation, breaking away from its former policy of exclusive admission to white women. The mid-1970s signaled another inclusive turn with the admittance of male students for day and graduate programs, and finally, in 2017, residential male students were also welcomed.

Picture this - in 1976, following the closure of Staunton Military Academy (SMA), Mary Baldwin College astutely acquired the grounds and buildings. The campus footprint expanded dramatically from just 19 acres to an impressive 58.5. Just a year later, the pioneering spirit continued as Mary Baldwin became the first college in Virginia to inaugurate an adult degree program.

1985 was a year of change with Cynthia Haldenby Tyson taking the reins as the eighth president. In her debut year, Tyson embraced the ambitious move of launching the Program for the Exceptionally Gifted (PEG), enabling academically gifted girls to secure bachelor's degrees ahead of their peers.

Fast forward to 1995. The Virginia Women's Institute for Leadership debuted as the only all-female cadet corps. In 2001, Mary Baldwin took another pioneering step by establishing the Shakespeare and Performance graduate program, coinciding with the American Shakespeare Center opening the Blackfriars Playhouse in Staunton.

Cynthia Haldenby Tyson's significant 18-year tenure as president wrapped up in 2003, passing on the mantle to Pamela Fox, earlier dean of Miami University's School of Fine Arts. May 2015 witnessed an eventful trustees' meeting, where a unanimous verdict penned a new chapter in the institution's history: come August 31, 2016, the institution rebranded as Mary Baldwin University, reflecting its comprehensive portfolio of bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs.

So friends, Mary Baldwin University carries the torch of its rich history and continues to light the path of education. The legacy of pioneers like Mary Julia Baldwin and Cynthia Haldenby Tyson will forever remain etched in its narrative. Celebrating its storied past, let's look forward to an equally remarkable future!
