Once upon a time, in the year 1946, a vision came to life in Steubenville, an American city that you may have never heard of. This aspiration was bestowed by none other than the first Bishop of Steubenville, Anthony John King Mussio. Could you imagine a more sacred entity than the same bishop inviting the Franciscan Friars of the Third Order Regular? This wasn't any ordinary meeting, the agenda was to establish a Catholic college right in the heart of Steubenville. Picture this, the focus of this endeavor was primarily to serve local students and what's more inspiring? It was specially dedicated to World War II veterans.
Fueled by passion and purpose, these noble friars in June 1946 accepted the bishop's plea. They purchased the Knights of Pythias Building in downtown Steubenville and rolled up their sleeves to establish this transformational college. With an investment of an impressive $350,000, they planted the seeds of the College of Steubenville.
As days turned to years, the enrollment steadily grew. Spaces in the college were filling up fast and there was an air of excitement mixed with tenacity. Architectural artifacts in the form of buildings were added to the panorama of the college. And all this while, the friars had a broader vision, they were envisioning a 40-acre property that took an overlooking stance on the city landscape. By the 1960s, this dream was realized and the property was rightfully acquired. The icing on the cake? The North Central Association of Colleges and Schools stamped the college with accreditation in 1960.
Life was geared up in the fast lane for the college, charting a successful route during its early years. The baton of leadership passed on between presidents Daniel W. Egan, Kevin R. Keelan, and Columba J. Devlin. Yet, the college started facing rough waters; social upheaval and declining enrollment rocked the boat, especially by the end of Keelan's second term in 1974.
Everything was hanging by a thread, with closure being a looming threat over the college. But, every cloud has a silver lining, and for the College of Steubenville, it was Michael Scanlan stepping into the shoes of the president. Drawing inspiration from his charismatic renewal movement at St. Francis Seminary, Scanlan embarked on a mission to drive a similar revival at Steubenville. He spiritually revamped the Sunday liturgy on the campus, bringing about an ode of charismatic praise, worship, and passionate preaching. He took the initiative to set up 'households', small teams of men and women focused on personal growth. Participation wasn’t optional, it was mandatory.
Despite the many changes, the once thriving college was still under dire straits. The year following Scanlan's structural changes proved to be difficult, marking the smallest incoming freshman class in the history of the college. To add to the gloom, five out of the top executives at the college stepped down or were dismissed, leading to a disconsolate faculty. However, Michael Scanlan stood undeterred.
Scanlan breathed a new life into the curriculum with prominent changes. Theology ̶ once underrated, now was reintroduced and swiftly became the major choice of students. Scanlan also introduced graduate programs in business and theology. His transformative leadership helped the college earn the prestigious title of a university in 1980!
Adding a feather to its cap, the nursing program was also accredited by the state government of Ohio in 1984 and the National League of Nursing in 1985. Under Scanlan’s leadership, the theology program flourished as the primary one across any Catholic university in America. The crown jewel? A one-of-a-kind Human Life Studies minor designed to demonstrate the sanctity of life.
By the dawn of the new millennium, Franciscan University of Steubenville had evolved into a pioneer educational institution. It saw an admission of over 2,100 students, almost double the number in the early 1970s.
However, the journey wasn't devoid of challenges. In 2022, David Morrier, a Franciscan friar who served as a campus minister until his removal in 2014, was sentenced to probation after pleading guilty to the sexual battery of a student he had been counseling, which took place over three years, from 2010 to 2013.
The legacy of the Franciscan University of Steubenville is a testament to overcoming hardships and embracing opportunities, to the resilience and determination of the founders and the commitment of i.t.s students.
