History Warren Wilson College

In the heart of Swannanoa River, a unique educational venture was initiated by the Women's Board of Home Missions of the Presbyterian Church. This happened back in 1893, when they secured a scenic piece of land that stretches over 420 acres or 170 hectares, essentially laying the foundations of an institution that would later evolve into the esteemed Warren Wilson College.

The board's primary concern was the lack of quality education in remote parts of America. Therefore, to tackle this issue, they decided to set up church-supported educational facilities in poverty-stricken areas. And in November 1894, the first step was taken with the establishment of Asheville Farm School. Imagine this; a quaint school with an enrolment of 25 students and a dedicated team of three professional educators nurturing minds with the first three elementary grades instruction.

Soon, the school started carving out a niche for itself, achieving significant milestones. In 1923, they celebrated their first high school graduation. As the school grew, a vital requirement was felt. The teachers and students needed a place of worship nearby, not wishing to traverse three miles to Riceville. Therefore, in 1925, a Presbyterian Church, named in honour of Warren Hugh Wilson—a prominent superintendent of the Presbyterian Church's Department of Church and Country Life—was established on the school premises.

Then came 1936, another turning point. Post-high school programs were created, tilting the educational focus toward vocational training. A significant development was in 1942, the merging of the Asheville Farm School and the Dorland-Bell School in Hot Springs, North Carolina. This resulted in a co-educational entity called Warren H. Wilson Vocational Junior College and Associated Schools.

World War II brought about substantial improvement in North Carolina's public education system, reducing the reliance on the high school run by the college. The last class passed out in 1957. However, before that, in 1952, the college had set a precedent by becoming one of the first in the South to desegregate. Interestingly, it was a unanimous decision by Sunderland dorm residents, who voted 54-1 in favour of allowing Alma Shippy, a Swannanoan African American, to become their fellow dorm-mate.

In 1967, a bold leap was taken; the junior college evolved into a four-year college, christened Warren Wilson College, with six academic majors on offer. The property on which the college stood was deeded over to the Board of Trustees of the college by the National Board of Missions in 1972. The four-year curriculum attracted a diverse demographic of students from different geographic and socio-economic backgrounds, contrary to the earlier student base that primarily comprised of underprivileged mountain youth.

The college, as it stands today, owes a lot to its eighth president—Lynn Morton, the first woman to hold this prestigious position in the history of the college and who was previously the provost and vice president of academic affairs at Queens University in Charlotte, North Carolina. Warren Wilson College, with an aim to provide high-quality education, has aptly served the academic needs of various segments of society, staying true to its roots of empowering the underprivileged. It remains an embodiment of dedication, foresight, and perseverance.
