History SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry

Picture this: the date is July 28, 1911. New York Governor John Alden Dix puts his signature on a bill. Why is this significant, you may ask? This historic act gave birth to New York State College of Forestry at Syracuse University. You'd think it was a smooth process, but it wasn't! The year before, Governor Charles Hughes had to say no to a similar bill. Interestingly, this act came after a 1903 decision to defund the New York State College of Forestry at Cornell.

Originally starting as a unit within Syracuse University, by 1913, this College of Forestry had grown into its independent entity. Now imagine a Syracuse native, Louis Marshall, a constitutional lawyer by profession and a firm believer in the importance of agriculture and forestry education. His commendable efforts culminate in the 1911 bill that Governor Dix signs.

Fast forward to 1911, the very first board of trustees meeting at the college, Marshal is elected president. Now here's a man committed to his role! He remained president until his demise, 18 years later.

Under the umbrella of this college, a special man graces us with his presence! Who might that be? None other than the first dean of the college, William L. Bray, a Ph.D. graduate from the University of Chicago. He was more than just a Dean. He was a botanist, plant ecologist, biogeographer, and Professor of Botany at Syracuse University.

With a strong association with Gifford Pinchot, who served as the first Chief of the United States Forest Service, Bray formed the agriculture division at the college in 1911.

An inspiring milestone: in 1912, the college opens its Ranger School in Wanakena, New York, right in the heart of the Adirondacks. Here's a forward-thinking step - by 1945, the university had started enrolling women! The first women to graduate completed their degrees in the late 1940s, majoring in fields such as landscape engineering and pulp and paper.

Taking a leap to January 1930, Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt securing a $600,000 allocation for the college's second building, a tribute to its early pioneer Louis Marshal.

As we ride the timeline towards 1948, the college finds a new identity within the newly formed State University of New York (SUNY). A few years later, in 1972, the college yet again went through a name change to the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

Even though this college was born from an act by the New York State Governor, it remained an independent entity. It never became a part of the administrative structure of Syracuse University, unlike other state-funded institutions created at private institutions in New York State.

Reaching the dawn of a new millennium in 2000, the SUNY system recognised ESF's "primacy" among the 64 SUNY campuses and contract colleges for development of new undergraduate degree programs in Environmental Science and Environmental Studies. It's an extraordinary journey of a century and more, isn't it?
