In the year 1948, a big shot named Thomas Dewey, who served as the Governer, thought it'd be an ace idea to gather all New York's public higher education establishments under one umbrella. He must've been as busy as a bee since it wasn't an easy task, but his grit and determination resulted in the birth of SUNY or what we lovingly call, 'The State University of New York'.
Our story starts, smack dab in the middle of the 19th century. Picture them, wouldn't you? The vintage furniture, bell bottom trousers, and people following their dreams of getting educated. Among them, was a group of ten dedicated doctors who in 1849, created the private medical university that would take the world by storm, 'the University at Buffalo'. Little did they know, their baby would grow up to be a part of something much, much larger!
After a couple of years that is, in 1884, a chap named John Morris had an aha moment. Why not have a place that gives the farmers and their children a crack at modern agriculture? Fast forward to 1891, and voila! The New York State College of Forestry at Cornell was born.
In 1908, Albany became the mecca of teachers flocking from all corners to get their edification at the New York State College for Teachers. Who knew that within four decades, it would open its arms to embrace the glorious tag of a university!
Then, there was a time in 1913, when a school for ceramics won the hearts of many an Indian student. Named the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, this institute strikes the perfect balance between creativity and practicality. Talk about killing two birds with one stone!
And there it was, in 1948, Ignoring the naysayers, Dewey brought these disparate institutions under one roof creating one tight-knit family known as SUNY. Today, it is one of the largest comprehensive systems of universities, colleges, and community colleges in the United States with a mission to 'Learn, Discover, Heal, Create—and make the world ever better'.
New York never sleeps, and neither does SUNY. The 1950s and 1960s are filled with highs, lows, and epic growth spurts. Does the phrase "on a roll" ring a bell? With school after school joining the SUNY ranks, the State University of New York was rockin' and rollin' across the 20th century!
So fast forward to the present day and what do you get? A whopping number of 64 campuses, spread across urban centers, rural landscapes, research centers - you name it! Home to nearly 1.3 million students, SUNY has grown leaps and bounds, proving size does matter.
