Chartered on December 11, 1890, the Pacific Lutheran Academy emerged as an institution envisioned to guide immigrants towards settling and finding work in their new homeland and also to create graduates who would contribute significantly to the church and community. It was founded by Norwegian immigrants who recognized the impact such an educational institution could have in the region. This idea was deeply rooted in the Scandinavian traditions of the founders.
Fast forward to 1894 the classes began with tuition as low as $1 per week and a modest student body of just 30 students. Bjug Harstad, the school's pioneer president was able to run the entire university from one building from 1894 to 1912. This building, previously the Old Main, has since been honoured as Harstad Hall, after the pioneering president.
In 1898, a significant divergence in branding occurred with the university being rechristened as the Pacific Lutheran Academy and Business College. Around this time, motivated to free the school from its plagued debt, Harstad embarked on an adventurous search for gold in Alaska. Despite his efforts, gold eluded him over one and a half years.
Nevertheless, it was not all disheartening for the academy, the PLA athletic club marked its first victory in men's basketball, a thrilling 15-12 win over the University of Washington in 1902. A significant gender boundary was overcome five years later with women being given the opportunity to play basketball.
1912 witnessed the construction of a new building on the university campus, a gymnasium equipped with a track, a stage and a basement science laboratory. By 1914, full accreditation was achieved, making possible the transfer of students to universities while retaining their credits.
However, Pacific Lutheran Academy remained primarily an academy until 1918, at which point it suspended instruction for two years. It then reopened as Pacific Lutheran College, merging with the previously situated Columbia Lutheran College in Everett. This heralded the move towards offering a four-year degree in education by 1939 and in liberal arts in 1942 and the institution gaining back its university status in 1960.
The first football team came into play in 1926, the "Gladiators", and another remarkable individual, Polly Langlow, a member of the women's basketball team made history by scoring 270 points in 12 games setting a national record. By 1927, the College's great musical tradition, the Choir of the West, was founded.
Fast forward to 1960, Pacific Lutheran College reclaimed its original name, transforming itself back to Pacific Lutheran University.
The 60s were a time of transformative growth with a decade-long construction boom seeing the rise of ten new buildings. The period also heralded significant changes in student life, from having no women in the dormitories to allowing coed and even opposite-sex visitation.
In 2020, PLU found itself on the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) list of censured administrations for a claim that they had violated the principles of academic freedom and tenure. And by the spring of 2021, the university announced cuts to full-time faculty equivalent (FTE) positions, discontinuing several majors and minors and one master's program, a decision expected to save between $2.5 million and $4 million.
