In the swinging sixties, 1965 to be exact, history was a-brewin' in Tacoma, Washington. Some good folks got together and birthed what we know today as Tacoma Community College (TCC). John F. Terrell, the first president of TCC, was one of the finest masterminds of this idea. Can you beat that? A college, right in the heart of Tacoma city. Talk about making dreams come true!
There's something about a first, isn't there? The first class, it rolled out in the fall of '65 with about 1,200 students. Imagine the buzz , the excitement! All eager beavers ready to lap up knowledge at this new establishment! That was no small feat, I tell ya!
Now, as years ticked by, TCC blitzed forward, introducing a bunch of courses. In 1970, saw the launch of the nursing program. Seen a doctor lately? Well, some of them might just be proud products of this very program! They then went ahead to introduce the music and arts program in 1980. As a result, TCC slowly but surely turned into a potpourri of academic excellence!
Fast forward to the 90s, TCC had its head in the clouds, quite literally! They upped the game and embraced technology. By 1996, the first online course was a go. What's more? They went big, hosting international students from a whopping 30 different countries. Talk about 'unity in diversity'.
2002, marked a proud moment for TCC. We had the honor of welcoming Pamela Transue as the president. Pamela, now she was one ambitious woman. She had plans for the college, and wouldn't stop until those plans became reality.
She didn't waste time. Under her leadership, TCC established University of Washington Tacoma in 2006 and it hit the ground running with a dynamic range of courses. Indian students, are you listening? These guys offer a range of programs from Technology to Business, Language to Humanities.
Life at TCC was not all work, no play though. They knew how to have fun, alright! Celebrations and festivities were part of the game, the International Festival being a prime example.
