In the bustling city of Tacoma of the year 1888, a dream took form. The originator of this vision was Charles Henry Fowler. Familiar with academia and the shape of institutes as he was the past president of Northwestern University, Fowler had a dream of creating a Christian educational institute right in Tacoma. The talk of this idea was sparked during a Methodist conference Fowler was a part of during his stay in Tacoma.
Have you ever experienced sibling rivalry? The story of our university’s location is reminiscent of that! Tacoma shared a friendly competition with Port Townsend for being the chosen location of the university. After much deliberation, Tacoma won the favored spot. On March 17, 1888, our university was legally brought to life as The Puget Sound University.
As the doors of Puget Sound University swung open for the first time in September 1890, a wave of 88 eager students swept in. Each of them was expected to uphold morality, with stern warnings against unhealthy habits like intoxication, tobacco use, and gambling, as well as crude mischief like obscene drawings or writings on college grounds. Turned out, standing on moral high ground wasn’t easy without financial stability!
The initial chapter of our university's story had its ups and downs. Limited funding meant the university had to move three times within the span of just 13 years! It even had a brief integration phase with Portland University. However, in 1903, a phoenix-like rebirth took place. It was a revival accompanied by a name change — the University of Puget Sound, now completely independent.
The next era, under President Edward H. Todd, saw our beloved university transform significantly. Todd's spirited tenacity infused financial and academic stability. The Million Dollar Campaign under his watch saw a whopping $1,022,723 raised for buildings, equipment, and the endowment fund. This surge in funds led to the construction of five buildings and the relocation of the campus to Tacoma's residential North End in 1924.
In 1914, another name change took place with the institute becoming the College of Puget Sound. This was followed by a tremendous expansion under the guidance of President R. Franklin Thompson, from 1942 to 1973. It was during his presidency, the campus took on its current expanse with the majority of its buildings constructed. By 1960, it was once again known as the University of Puget Sound.
The reins then passed onto Phillip M. Phibbs from 1973 to 1992, who oversaw another evolution phase. The institute no longer had ties to the Methodist Church and entire fiscal responsibility was claimed by an independent board of trustees. Emphasis shifted towards undergraduate education, with off-campus programs curtailed, barring the law school and select graduate programs.
In 1992, President Susan Resneck Pierce ushered in an era of extensive renovations and new constructions worth $100 million. The law school was sold off to Seattle University under her tenure to reinvest resources in bolstering the undergraduate campus.
Our university was then bestowed to the stewardship of Ronald R. Thomas, a lover of Victorian literature and former Vice-President of Trinity College, affectionately known as "Ron Thom" by our students. This was from 2003 to 2016. February of 2016 witnessed a historic announcement, Isiaah Crawford was selected as our next president to succeed Thomas upon his retirement.
Now, Thomas Hall opened its doors in 2013, serving as a residential space for 135 students. Accommodating academic-residential programs, entrepreneurship, and the Honors Programs, Thomas Hall continues to inspire our students today. The institution may have started on shaky grounds, but today, it stands as a beacon of academia revered for its resilience and evolution.
