This tale of educational endeavor starts in 1851, right from the heart of sparkling Oklahoma. It was originally known as the Cherokee National Female Seminary. Kind of makes you picture stern school-mistresses in starched petticoats and strict ponytails, doesn’t it?
Perhaps the Seminary’s most unique attribute was its founders, the Cherokee Nation. Yup, the Native American tribal folk, striving for the interest of education, even back then! 1889 marked the pivotal year when the Seminary met an unfortunate fire accident. But, every dark cloud has a silver lining, right? Well, in this case, it was more of a state-funded, educational silver lining!
The State of Oklahoma took charge of the debris and gave birth to Northeastern State Normal School in 1909. ‘Normal School’ sounds somewhat ordinary, even boring, doesn’t it? But, let me assure you, this place was everything but normal! It even got a nifty nickname, 'The Light of the Lakes', in reference to its gorgeous location in the lush greenery of the Illinois River Valley.
