History Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University

Imagine this, back in 1885, a brave abolitionist by the name of Jonathan C. Gibbs, just a year after securing a seat in the Florida legislature, dared to dream about an educational sanctuary for African-Americans. And so, he introduced the legislation that created the State Normal College for Colored Students. The location for this groundbreaking college was Tallahassee, the heart of Florida's black history, set on a once flourishing slave plantation of 375 acres. Wondering why? Thanks to its robust African-American community, Tallahassee was Florida's main trading center for slaves.

A significant milestone for this college occurred on October 3, 1887, when classes commenced. The college ascended to be a land-grant institution in just four years. Guess how? With a princely sum of $7,500 received under the Second Morrill Act! But, it only secured its position as a bona fide higher learning institution after the 1905 Buckman Act was enforced. This act was not only critical for its morphing into the cornerstone of the modern Florida A&M University but also instrumental in the creation of the University of Florida and Florida State University.

You might be curious to know the journey of its names. The college once got a moniker upgrade to the State Normal and Industrial College for Colored Students. And then, in 1909, it became the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical College for Negroes. Coming to its lasting name, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University was finally christened in 1953, making it the only publicly funded and thriving historically black college in Florida.

With progress came the hurdles. In 1923, the institution faced a hard blow as student protest against Governor Cary A. Hardee's plan to eliminate the liberal arts program erupted. Hardee's misguided worry was that well-rounded education would drive away the African-American population, affecting Florida's economy. The protest forced University president Nathan B. Young to step down but also led to the burning down of several campus buildings. Still, hope prevailed. After Hardee's term concluded, the liberal arts program was restored under the new president, J.R.E. Lee.

In 1951, the University ventured into healthcare, introducing Pharmacy and Nursing programs. To provide students with practical experience, it even erected a hospital. But get this, the Florida A&M Hospital remained the only facility serving African Americans within a radius of 150 miles from Tallahassee until 1971.

May 26, 1956, emerged as a significant date when FAMU students Wilhemina Jakes and Carrie Patterson were unjustly arrested. Their so-called crime? They were accused to incite a riot leading to the famous Tallahassee bus boycott against racial segregation. This wasn't the end of student activism at FAMU; students continued to protest segregation throughout 1963.

Fast forward to the 90s, FAMU outshined Harvard by recruiting more National Achievement Scholars in 1992, 1995, and 1997. Did the year 2000 surprise you? FAMU and Harvard were neck-and-neck with 62 new recruited scholars each! Seeing this impressive achievement, you wouldn't believe that the number declined sharply to just one by 2006.

1997 was a notable year for FAMU – it bagged the Time-Princeton Review "College of the Year" and won recognition from Black Issues in Higher Education in 1999 for awarding the most baccalaureate degrees to African-Americans nationwide.

Turbulent times returned in 2011 when student Robert Champion lost his life in a hazing incident. This unfortunate event resulted in faculty resignations, criminal charges against 13 people, and the imposition of probation on FAMU for a year by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Moving into the recent past, in 2019, FAMU, alongside other HBCUs cemented a partnership with Adtalem Global Education and its for-profit affiliate, the Ross University School of Medicine located in Barbados.

Thus, as you can see, the journey of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University has been a roller coaster ride, from its inception during the struggle for black rights to its evolution into a leading institution of higher education.
