Florida State University

Tracing its roots back to 1851, Florida State University (FSU) now stands as a prominent research institution that has carved out an illustrious path through its progressive trajectory. From humble beginnings as two separate seminaries, FSU now boasts a very active community of scholarship, boasting advancements like its significant contribution to the construction of the Hadron Collider, developing a highly-effective anti-cancer machine, as well as pioneering a "supercomputer". The institution currently houses 16 colleges, spans over 110 centers, institutes, and divisions, offering 300+ academic programs. Hotspots for academic competition include the social sciences, humanities, and business specializations.

Over the years, FSU has dynamically expanded its academic horizons. The 20th century saw the unveiling of faculties addressing pertinent societal issues, while the dawn of the 21st century witnessed the birth of five more faculties. The keystone to FSU's teaching methodology is the liberal arts tradition, providing students with a holistic and introspective academic journey.

From a student's perspective, studying at FSU offers multiple advantages. Not only does FSU provide a vast array of coursework options, the university's teaching principles are centered around nurturing well-rounded individuals. The ‘Liberal Arts’ instructive style encourages students to explore different fields before settling on a focused area of study. This approach affords the students the luxury of time and exploratory academic freedom. More importantly, FSU’s holistic view believes in life-long learning, where the emphasis is not solely on professional development, but it extends to personal growth. Practical skills and hands-on knowledge are highly valued. So, FSU students graduate with a strong academic portfolio, but also with life skills that give them a cutting edge in a fiercely competitive global job market, making it a desirable destination for prospective Indian students.

History Florida State University

Unknown to many, the story of Florida State University (FSU) started even before Florida became a state! Let's travel back in time to 1819 when Spain ceded Florida Territory to the United States under the Adams–Onís Treaty. The seeds of FSU were sown during the 1823 U.S. Congress when the idea of a higher education system was proposed.

Fast forward to 1851, the Florida Legislature passed an Act to establish two institutions of learning. The purpose? To provide both male and female students with a solid common school education, impart knowledge in the mechanic arts, husbandry, agricultural chemistry, and law. By 1856, the city of Tallahassee had its own school for boys - the Florida Institute. The hope was for the state to take it over as a seminary. True to their hope, it became a reality when the Governor signed off on this proposal at the start of 1857.

So, just where was this seminary located? Well, if you've been to the Westcott Building, it stood on the same hill where the Florida Institute was. This location had a rather gloomy past as public executions were commonly held here in early Tallahassee. Moving on to brighter times, between 1860 and 1861, the Florida Legislature initiated formal military training at the school, a clear diversion from its original academic path.

Despite the Civil War, the institute continued to grow and had around 250 students by the end of the war. With the Institute's cadets managing to secure a win at the Battle of Natural Bridge in 1865, Tallahassee became the only Confederate capital east of the Mississippi River not to be occupied by Union forces. A historic event forever marked by a battle streamer bearing the words "NATURAL BRIDGE 1865" displayed on the Florida State University's Army ROTC flag.

From being known as the West Florida Seminary, it was organized as The Literary College of the University of Florida in 1883. But it wasn't until 1901, that it became Florida State College, a four-year institution. The following year, the institution began awarding the degree of Master of Arts, and the first master's degree was awarded.

The institute's history took a turn when the 1905 Florida Legislature passed the Buckman Act. This Act reorganized the Florida college system into a school for white males (University of the State of Florida), a school for white females (Florida Female College later changed to Florida State College for Women), and a school for African Americans (State Normal and Industrial College for Colored Students). FSU remained a school for women until the Florida Legislature returned it to coeducational status and designated it Florida State University in 1947.

Over the years, the University has grown and evolved, adapting to the changing times and educational needs. FSU became a center for student activism in the 1960s and 1970s, pushing for racial integration, women's rights, and opposition to the Vietnam War.

Finally, let's conclude our history trail with a major milestone - in June 2000, the Florida State University College of Medicine was created. It attained full accreditation in 2005, just five years after its establishment. Complimenting this development, The King Life Sciences Building, which sits next to the College of Medicine, was completed in June 2008, amalgamating all the biological science departments under one roof.

All these historical events, the trials and tribulations, the moments of triumph and transformation have made FSU what it is today - a respected university committed to providing a vibrant learning environment to its diverse student community.
