History Heidelberg University

Remember the year 1378? No? Let me transport you back in time. A year when a severe rupture known as The Great Schism shook the Catholic Church. Two popes were elected after Pope Gregory XI's death, one residing in Avignon, chosen by the French, the other in Rome, elected by Italian cardinals. German leaders took a bold stance supporting the latter, dramatically impacting German scholars in Paris who lost their stipends and had to exit the city.

This moment of chaos created an opportunity for Rupert I, laying the foundation for Heidelberg University in a relatively small city that served as the Palatinate's capital. Rupert I kick-started negotiations with the Curia and eventually, on 23rd October 1385, received Pope Urban VI's permission to establish a general study school (students, that's your studium generale in Latin!). The formal decision came the next year, on 26th June 1386.

Now let's fast forward to 18th October 1386. Picture a grand Pontifical High Mass at the Heiliggeistkirche (did I lose you?). To cut it short, this marked the inception of Heidelberg University making it Germany's most ancient university. A few days later, Marsilius of Inghen, their first rector, gave his first lecture. His seal had a firm message - semper apertus, translating to "the book of learning is always open."

The university thrived and by March 1390, had a growing populace of 185 students. The professors were sharp minds and acted as advisors for Louis III at the Council of Constance between 1414 and 1418. This prestigious engagement set the stage for Heidelberg University's reputation for excellence.

However, it wasn't all plain sailing. The period of late humanism was a time of great intellectual upheaval at the university, and it also witnessed the introduction of Calvinism. After Martin Luther's impactful disputation at Heidelberg in April 1518, many of his followers became leading reformists in southwest Germany.

The next phase wasn't a pleasant sight. First, the notorious Thirty Years' War in 1618 drained the university of its financial resources and intellectual riches. Then in 1622, the all-important Bibliotheca Palatina was stolen from the university and taken to Rome. Rebuilding efforts were thwarted by King Louis XIV's troops who left the place in ruins in 1693.

Moving on, did things turn around for this great center of knowledge you ask? Well yes, they did! Amidst the aftermath of the Counter-Reformation, the Jesuits took control, laying the groundwork for the Old University on the present University Square. Despite the decline and troubles over the next few years, Charles Theodore, added new chairs, found institutes, and scaled the heights of academia by setting up an observatory in Mannheim.

More turmoil was ahead though. Post the French Revolution, the university lost all its property on the left side of Rhine, increasing fears of its dissolution. But the phoenix always rises from the ashes! Karl Friedrich, the Grand Duke of Baden, established the university as a state-run institution back in 1803 and since then, it has carried his name alongside Ruprecht's.

The next few decades were tough, but also exciting. Heidelberg University found its footing again in the intellectual world, playing a crucial role in the development of Liberalism and German unity. It hosted esteemed academics, pioneered research, and led the transformation of American liberal arts colleges into research universities.

Did you know that the university even granted women admission to study in 1900? Yes, Heidelberg was one of the first to break this gender barrier! This institution of learning also played a pivotal role as a center for democratic thinking during the Weimar Republic era.

However, with the rise of Nazi Germany, the university, like all others, was forced to support the Adolf Hitler regime, resulting in the dismissal of a significant number of staff and students due to political or racial reasons. The university even changed the inscription above the main entrance from "The Living Spirit" to "The German Spirit". The eugenics ideas powered by the Nazi regime were even implemented at the university's clinics.

Yet, not everything was lost. After World War II, the university underwent significant denazification. Since Heidelberg was spared from major wartime destruction, the university was quickly rebuilt. The university grew rapidly during the 1960s and 1970s and became one of the key sites for student protests in Germany.

Today, Heidelberg University stands tall with about 28,000 enrolled students and over 4,000 full-time faculty members, including 476 university professors. It was designated as a 'University of Excellence' twice, in 2007 and 2012, an initiative started by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the German Research Foundation to
