In the cold, brisk February of 1865, amidst the throbbing heart of Topeka, Kansas, a beacon of knowledge started to take shape. Known as "Lincoln College", this symbol of education was birthed through the combined ventures of Kansas State and the General Association of Congregational Ministers and Churches of Kansas. Contributing significantly to its foundation was an incredible individual, abolitionist John Ritchie who generously gifted the land on which the college proudly perched.
The winds of change swirled around 1868. Your truly loved Lincoln College went through its first major transformation after Ichabod Washburn gifted a handsome $25,000 to the institution. Now you must be asking, who's this Ichabod? A church deacon, abolitionist, and successful industrialist from Worcester, Massachusetts, he was the embodiment of benevolence. As a tribute to his enduring generosity, the institution was renamed "Washburn College".
The college had an interesting way of showing its gratitude too! They adopted a variation of the Washbourne arms as a proud emblem, painting it in the colors of the school. Of course, you might not notice it today. Why? After a tectonic shift from a college to university, Washburn decided to shake things up. They discarded the family arms in favor of a stylish "W", now the emblematic symbol of the institution. However, the spirit of Ichabod lives on in the school's still-active mascot, "The Ichabod".
"The Ichabod" was merely a name till 1938, when Bradbury Thompson, a proud alumnus and soon to be renowned graphic artist, gave shape to his study-loving and tailcoat-wearing figurine that now represents the University. Your favorite athletic teams are also counted as "Ichabods", extending to women's teams as of the 2013-14 school year.
Yet, amidst the glory and grandeur, a dark phase marred Washburn's history in 1913. It was the year when it shut down its medical department. Back in 1895, the public learned about a scandal involving the illicit use of stolen bodies for anatomical study, leading to nationwide uproar. This incident raised such a tumult that the state governor had to deploy troops to protect the school. Key members of the medical school were arrested and a few convicted.
The annals of Washburn's history also boast a remarkable involvement in World War II. It participated in the V-12 Navy College Training Program, becoming one of 131 colleges that offered students a path to a Navy commission.

Despite the shift, Washburn continued to retain its status as a municipal subdivision of the state. Today, it operates under the leadership of its own nine-member Board of Regents.
