History Towson University

In the year 1865, sweeping educational reforms were introduced in Maryland through the approval of a new constitution. The changes initialized by the General Assembly of Maryland particularly aimed at enhancing teacher training. With this goal in focus, the Maryland State Normal School (M.S.N.S.) was established, based on the innovative French tradition of "normal school". By January 15, 1866, Maryland was ready to open the doors of its first teacher-training school.

To start with, it found its footing in Red Man's Hall, positioned on North Paca Street in Baltimore. This school, initially meagre with just eleven students and a faculty trio, began its journey under the leadership of McFadden Alexander Newell, the first principal who also held the position of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction. The first graduating class, small but significant, consisted of sixteen dedicated students in June 1866.

As years passed, this small establishment began to experience an exponential growth in enrollment. The school quickly outgrew its original premises in Red Man's Hall and relocated by 1873. Its new home was a prestigious mansion at the intersection of North Charles and East Franklin Streets, owned by the esteemed Howard family. Coincidentally, this mansion sat right across from the First Unitarian Church of Baltimore!

With an enormous increase in the student pool, the need for a dedicated school facility was more pressing than ever. By 1876, the State Normal School moved to a new landmark building in West Baltimore, accommodating its faculty and 206 students. The location was picturesque, facing Lafayette Square on Carrollton and Lafayette Avenues.

With the dawn of the 20th century, the demand for well-trained teachers reached unprecedented heights. The state was reported to have an annual requirement for 350 fresh teachers, while the Maryland State Normal School was only managing to graduate less than a hundred. On top of that, the school's facilities in West Baltimore were proving to be inadequate.

Around this time, Sarah Richmond, a former student from the pioneer batch of the school, initiated a mission to build a campus that could sufficiently address the needs of the school. By 1910, an official sanction by the General Assembly resulted in the formation of a committee to supervise site selection, budgeting, and design goals for the new campus. Sarah Richmond herself was on this panel, along with M. Bates Stephens and John Charles Linthicum.

An 80-acre site in Towson finally emerged as the chosen location after an exhaustive survey of numerous potential areas. The General Assembly funded the $600,000 move in 1912, and the construction of the first Administration Building began the following year. By September 1915, the new campus began its educational journey, equipped with Stephens Hall, Newell Hall, and a power plant.

Near 1934, there was a renewed push for higher educational qualifications for public school teachers, emphasizing degrees over teaching certificates. The school subtly shifted its curriculum to offer Bachelor of Science degrees. A year later, the institution was rebranded as Maryland State Teachers College at Towson.

The advent of the baby boomer generation in 1964 triggered a dramatic surge in college enrollment figures. Towson State saw its number jump from 3,537 to a staggering 13,399 within a decade. Fast expansion brought forth an inevitable burst of construction activity, adding the Center for the Arts, University Union, Cook Library, and many more facilities.

Under the leadership of President James L. Fisher, Towson State University became the fourth name change in 1976. The University further modernized its course offerings to keep up with the rising demand. In 1988, Towson joined a newly created network of 10 public institutions, the University System of Maryland.

On July 1, 1997, the "state" designation was dropped to reflect Towson's metamorphosis into a metropolitan university. Affectionately known today as Towson University, it mirrors the developmental journey and growth that the school has been through. Amongst global audiences, it continues to be recognised for its rich academic heritage and its commitment to continuous learning and innovation.
