Can you imagine the buzz and excitement on a certain summer morning of July 7, 1922? That's when Mervyn B. Walsh, a well-respected certified public accountant, had a breakthrough idea that would revolutionize the world of accounting. He chose to acquire a Pace & Pace franchise, and with it, brought the groundbreaking Pace Accounting Method exclusively to Detroit. On that day, the Walsh Institute of Accountancy was born. By September 18 of the same year, 23 enthusiastic students had already enrolled in the institute’s first courses.
Fast forward to 1965, a critical time for accountants in Michigan. A new policy stipulated that one must hold a bachelor's degree to sit for the Uniform CPA (Certified Public Accountant) Exam. Mervyn Walsh chose that year to retire, but not before the state of Michigan was in the throes of expanding its community college system. Naturally, this presented an exciting opportunity for the Walsh Institute. Instead of competing with these institutions, it decided to evolve, join forces, and thus began its journey as an upper-division college on December 31, 1968.
Now established as an upper-division institution, the re-christened Walsh College of Accountancy and Business Administration began offering advanced business education to students who had already completed two years of college. Strategic collaborations were forged with local colleges like Oakland and Macomb community colleges. This soon resulted in the construction of a 10,000-square-foot facility in Troy, Michigan, conveniently located close to both colleges.
By 1970, the college had begun awarding its first bachelor's degrees — Bachelor of Accountancy and Bachelor of Business Administration. Four years later, it launched its first graduate degree — Master of Science in Taxation. Walsh's unwavering commitment to unparalleled education didn't go unnoticed and led to its accreditation by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA) in 1975. Over the years, more degrees were introduced, such as Master of Science degrees in Professional Accountancy (1980), Finance (1986), and Management (1989).
With the advent of the digital age in the '90s, the college seized the opportunity to enhance its curriculum and accommodate more students by constructing larger facilities, introducing new degrees, and eventually, embracing online teaching. It even pioneered the Master of Science in Information Management and Communication degree in 1996.
1998 marked a substantial leap for the college. It not only opened a Novi campus but also introduced its Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree. Additionally, this was also the year Walsh offered its first online courses.
Fast forward to 2001, Walsh College received a significant nod of validation from the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA) which granted it permission to offer complete online degree programs and provided them with an extended ten-year accreditation. In 2005, it launched its first 100% online degree - the Master of Science in Information Assurance.
The college's growth was phenomenal. By 2006, with the approval from NC-SARA to award its first doctoral degree, the Doctor of Management in Executive Leadership was introduced. By the autumn of 2007, the first batch of passionate learners enrolled in the program.
Walsh College’s major achievements continued into 2010. Its entrepreneurship program won a significant grant and caught the nation's attention in April of that year. The Blackstone Charitable Foundation of New York had selected Walsh College along with Detroit's Wayne State University to share a grant of a whopping $2 million to support the remarkable initiative, Blackstone LaunchPad.
