In the early 60s, a dream took shape in the heartland of America - Tulsa, Oklahoma. An evangelist named Oral Roberts envisioned the birth of a new university - a Christian based institution. This dream was quite unique as it revolved around God's authority and the Holy Spirit. It all began when the ground was officially broken for the construction of Oral Roberts University in 1962.
The following year, the State of Oklahoma granted its charter, and by 1965, the university had opened its doors to a humble, yet promising, student body of 300. The campus was already home to seven major buildings by then. The mandate that God had given Roberts expressly stated - "Raise up your students to hear My voice, to go where My light is dim, where My voice is heard small, and My healing power is not known, even to the uttermost bounds of the earth. Their work will exceed yours, and in this, I am well pleased."
One building stood out from the rest, the Prayer Tower. It was a contentious creation as academic leaders believed its presence might interfere with achieving accreditation for the university. Roberts, however, felt its significance. Architect Frank Wallace's design for the tower was realized in 1967 at a cost of $2 million. Billy Graham, a prominent evangelist, graced the university's dedication ceremony that year as the keynote speaker.
The university celebrated its first partial graduation in 1968 and the first full graduation in 1969. It achieved accreditation from the North Central Association in 1971. Throughout the university's maiden decade, numerous iconic structures graced the campus, such as the Howard Auditorium, the Graduate Center, the Mabee Center, and Christ's Chapel.
The 70s and 80s brought their own challenges and milestones. The O. W. Coburn School of Law was established in 1979. However, due to financial struggles, it had to be shut down seven years later. The same decade saw the rise and fall of the City of Faith Medical and Research Center hospital (1981) and the Oral Roberts University School of Medicine (1978). Richard Roberts, Oral Roberts' son, was anointed as the president of the university in 1993. The university also ventured into telecommunication with the establishment of Golden Eagle Broadcasting, a digital satellite Christian, and family programming television network in 1996.
Controversies also surrounded the university, from students mistakenly disrupting services at a mosque near the University of Tulsa in 1997 to allegations of discrimination against LGBT students for which they found a place on Soulforce's 2006 Equality Ride route. The new millennium wasn't any different, with the university facing several upheavals, including a wrongful termination lawsuit against them in 2007. The 2010s saw racism issues being tackled and the opening of a bilingual Hispanic Center on campus. However, they did receive Title IX exception in 2017, which legally allowed them to discriminate against LGBT students.
Despite the controversies and struggles, the university continued to strive towards providing quality education and expanding its reach. The university transitioned to virtual classes during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, ensuring the relentless perseveration of knowledge. The same year, the university announced its Impact 2030 campaign with the aim of making ORU a "maximum global impact" by 2030, reaffirming its commitment towards spreading education and divine healing power to the world.
