Initially founded as the Presbyterian School for Girls in 1882, our beloved University of Tulsa has an incredibly rich history. Our school started humbly in the Indian Territory of Muskogee, serving as a beacon of education for the young women of the Creek Nation. Just over a decade later, in 1894, the school expanded. It blossomed into Henry Kendall College, named after the honorable Reverend Henry Kendall.
The journey was not easy, our first president William A. Caldwell served an intense but brief two-year term. It was through his successor, William Robert King, a dedicated Presbyterian minister who had travelled from Tennessee all the way to Oklahoma that the college navigated its early years successfully. Under King’s guidance, Henry Kendall College moved to a larger, more sufficient campus – a generous donation by the illustrious Creek Nation Chief Pleasant Porter.
Did you know that Kendall College played an instrumental role in the State of Sequoyah? Our dedicated students, faculty and administrators worked tirelessly designing the proposed constitution’s seal and handle most of its writing! During these years, we were led by our third president, A. Grant Evans who valiantly steered our struggling school towards growth. His tenure was marked with small class sizes and holistic academic progress.
In the early 1900s, our administration faced considerable challenges and was forced to seek alternatives for the future of the school. Opportunity knocked in the form of the smaller town of Tulsa and offered us a chance to relocate – a decision that shaped the destiny of our esteemed institution.
The move to Tulsa in 1907 came courtesy of the Tulsa Commercial Club. Their generous offer included $100,000, 20 acres of real estate and a guarantee for utilities and street car service. This move breathed new life into our school, playing a pivotal role in the initiation of higher education in Tulsa.
The following decade saw the emergence of several significant presidents including Arthur Grant Evans, Levi Harrison Beeler and Seth Reed Gordon. It was around this time in 1918 when the Methodist Church proposed establishing McFarlin College which, in a twist of fate, ended up merging with Henry Kendall College in 1920 to form The University of Tulsa.
Our growth journey continued and in 1928, we opened our prestigious School of Petroleum Engineering. Our school’s finances waned during the Great Depression but with the help of oil tycoon Waite Phillips, we made a miraculous recovery. Under his guidance, university finances stable, and it received many donations including the Skelly Mansion.
Over the years, several other enlightened leaders took the reins, expanding our campus, boosting our endowment, and progressing our academic standing. We saw major renovations and construction projects under anthropologist Steadman Upham's term, including hosting The Bob Dylan Archive – solidifying our status as a significant cultural entity. Amid the challenges of the 21st century, our institution continued to thrive and evolve.
Today, the University of Tulsa stands proudly with a legacy of over a century. Each leader, student and faculty member having etched their mark in our foundations. All of them part of the university’s journey, each one of them a piece of its soul. As we look to the future, we stand guided by our past, our challenges, and our achievements, ready to keep creating history.
