Once upon a time in 1976, in the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas, a unique institute called the Dharma Realm Buddhist University (DRBU) was born. The university saw its first intake of bright-eyed students a year later, in 1977, bringing life and vigour to the academic halls. Three extraordinary individuals untiringly working behind the scenes deserve a mention here. The first Chancellor was the esteemed Venerable Master Hsuan Hua, and he was accompanied by the indefatigable Bhikshuni Heng Hsien and the esteemed Professor Ron Epstein.
The curtains were up, the stage was set, and from 1976-1984, the university operated under the commitment and authorization of the California Postsecondary Education Commission. It was during these initial years that, Venerable Master Hsuan Hua along with Paul Cardinal Yu Bin laid the foundation of the Institute of World Religions, cultivating a deeper understanding of spirituality.
By the time 1984 rolled in, the DRBU was ready for bigger things, and it achieved Approval to Operate as a California Degree-Granting Institution under the California Education Code, transforming itself into a haven for seekers of knowledge. California’s Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE) gives it the green light to operate, adding to its credibility.
The year 1986 was another milestone when the institution organized the Conference on World Religions for the first time in California. By 1994, the Institute of World Religions had expanded its horizons and taken a new home at the Berkeley Buddhist Monastery.
The turn of the millennium was heralded with numerous collaborations, beginning with the Graduate Theological Union and Pacific School of Religion in 1997. The year 2000 also brought with it a special series, the Venerable Master Hua Memorial Lecture series, designed to honour the enduring legacy of the founding father.
As we moved into the new millennium, the year 2001 was marked with the inaugural launch of the academic journal, Religion East & West, by the Institute for World Religions, providing in-depth analysis and insights into world religions.
Let’s leap forward to 2006 when the vision of a Berkeley campus was realised under the guidance of Reverend Heng Sure, Ph.D., making him the inaugural director. But the development didn’t stop here; come 2011, and DRBU launched its university blog, dharmas.
The year 2013 marked the beginning of a new academic chapter, with the introduction of two innovative programs, the BA in Liberal Arts and MA in Buddhist Classics, gaining approval by the BPPE. This significant period saw the sunset of six existing degree programs to accommodate these new offerings.
By December 2013, DRBU’s consistent commitment to academic excellence was acknowledged on a wider scale when it was granted Eligibility for WSCUC Candidacy. The story came full circle in February 2018, with DRBU being accredited by WSCUC, a recognition that truly solidified the standing and maturity of the institution. And that, dear readers, brings us to the present, where the Dharma Realm Buddhist University continues its legacy of blending academic rigor with spiritual enlightenment.
