Travel back in time to a vast 120-acre estate, then known as Connecticut Farms and Elizabethtown, bought by William Livingston, a prominent lawyer and New Jersey's soon-to-be first elected governor in 1776. Livingston had big dreams to construct a country residence, a distance away from his New York City home. Can you envision the splendid Georgian-style house that stood tall by 1772, featuring 14 rooms and adorned with extensive grounds, gardens and orchards?
This grandiose house earned the name 'Liberty Hall' in honor of Livingston’s Revolutionary War contributions and his signing of the United States Constitution. The echoes of history ring loud with the visits of Alexander Hamilton and Martha Washington, the latter who stayed during her husband's inauguration, and President George Washington visiting her while Liberty Hall was under her stay.
Sadly, Liberty Hall was no stranger to the harsh realities of war, suffering damage from both British and American troops during the Revolutionary War. However, it retained its prominence, hosting the Revolutionary War's Battle of Connecticut Farms. Livingston, diligent and principled, continued to improve its gardens and grounds, maintaining it until his passing in 1790.
The idea of Liberty Hall was kept alive when, in 1811, the Kean family secured the Livingston estate. Peter Kean, purchased it in trust for his mother, Susan Livingston Kean Niemcewicz, as women back then were ineligible to own properties in their own right. In honor of Susan’s second husband, Count Julian Niemcewicz, a Polish nobleman who fought for Poland’s independence, the name of Liberty Hall was changed to Ursino, an echo of Niemcewicz's Polish estate.
The pages of Liberty Hall’s history were timelessly turned until 1958, when it became the permanent site for Newark State College.
