Established in 1960, the Grand Valley State University, familiarity known as GVSU, has morphed from an initial class of 225 students to a globally recognised institution of higher education that fosters a modern approach to learning. After garnering the designation of a higher education institution from the state assembly in 1987, GVSU understood the importance of diversified education and introduced a remarkable selection of bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs, spanning across an astonishing 200 different areas. The magnitude doesn't stop there. From its humble first graduation, where they saw off 138 students in June 1967, to today, the University now dons an extensive portfolio of a whopping 4,000 study abroad programs, a testament to the institution's dedication to broadening the academic horizon of its students.
The GVSU offers a dynamic learning environment tailored for students prepared to immerse themselves in different cultures and fields of study. Engaging in these programs also cultivates an international perspective, fostering a sensitivity to cultural diversity, a quality highly appreciated in the global workplace today. The master's programs, doctoral programs, and a whopping list of 200 areas of study provide an array of choices - individuals are likely to find a field that not only aligns with their interests but also drive their professional trajectory in the desired direction.

Let's take a trip down memory lane and follow the footprints of Saginaw Valley State University, an institution of many firsts. Our journey starts in1922, with the setting up of Bay City Junior College, the first beam of higher education in the Saginaw Valley region. You might feel the excitement in the air of 1961 when it transformed into Delta College. Yet, something was missing. The valley yearned for a baccalaureate institution, and it wasn't long until the dream was realized.
Skipping to 1963, a monumental year in the history of SVSU, where it breathed its first breath as Saginaw Valley College. Initially a private institution, the Michigan State in just two years recognized its potential and gave it the state's blessings. Continuing its metamorphosis in 1974, the institute gained a new identity as Saginaw Valley State College, and finally got its university status in 1987. Now that's a journey, isn't it?
In the warm year of 1955, magnetic ideas started swirling in the minds of the area's civic leaders, finding the need for a higher institution right in their backyard. Step by step, they brought their vision to life. From getting the nod of approval from voters in 1958, to establishing the two-year college, Delta within three short years.
Fast rewind to 1963! The papers were signed, the ink dried and the future Saginaw Valley College was born. Now, this is where the story gets more exciting. in 1964 Dr. Samuel D. Marble, the already sitting president of Delta College, became the first president of the newly birthed institution before resigning from delta within four months. The first seeds of students comprising of 119 bright young minds completed their two years at Delta and transferred to SVC.
Come 1966, the first baton was passed and the first batch of ten students tossed their graduation hats to the sky. This momentous ceremony was held in aMidland church. Amidst all these firsts, the students were yet to step into their own university grounds. A campus location was finally decided in Kochville Township in 1966 and no time was wasted moving the classes to a building there the very next year.
Now, every University needs a mascot, right? And we have Cardinals! Why Cardinals you ask? Well, back in 1972, two of our coaches spotted a kitchen decoration with a cardinal on it at a golf tournament in Kentucky. The bird seemed lucky, and so the Cardinals were born. By 1974, we made sure everybody recognized us by hiring Frank "Muddy" Waters, the first football coach of Saginaw Valley State College.
This brings us to 1974, a significant year when Samuel D. Marble resigned from his presidency and Jack M. Ryder took the reins. The institute held its first major international endeavor in 1980, hosting two Japanese students, marking the beginning of a diverse international student base.
Do you remember the saga of November 5, 1987? It was the day Saginaw Valley State College wore its new title proudly, Saginaw Valley State University. Dr. Jack Ryder handed over his throne to Eric R. Gilbertson in1989.
On February 10, 2014, we welcomed the era of Donald Bachand, SVSU's fourth president who took to his position with aplomb on February 17, and officially installed by June 22. Now, leap to January 1, 2023, when Dr. George Grant Jr. held the reins as the fifth president of SVSU after serving as Chancellor of Penn State Berks.
So, that's our rich and remarkable journey. Saginaw Valley State University has been writing its history with each passing step, each daunting milestone and every inspired leader it's welcomed. Its echoes can be heard in its lecture halls, on its sports fields, and amongst its high-achieving alumni. Isn't it inspiring? And the best part? The journey isn't over yet!
