Once upon a time in 1860, the tranquillity of New York was stirred. A group of civic leaders led by a renowned poet, William Cullen Bryant, thought about the future of medical education. Bryant, being an editor of the New York Evening Post, was worried about the state of hospitals and medical practices in New York. The medical treatments that involved bleeding, purges, and heavy doses of strong drugs disturbed him. He believed that medical studies should incorporate a better understanding of patient needs.
The Civil War that took center stage during the early years in the United States encouraged a wave of interest in the medical field. A surge in health-related jobs was evident, leading to the establishment of the first college, then named Homeopathic Medical College of the State of New York, in a corner building near Union Square in Manhattan. The first semester saw 59 eager students and 8 dedicated professors. The name was christened to New York Homeopathic Medical College in 1869 and added a Hospital to its moniker in 1887.
A similar institution, the New York Medical College and Hospital for Women, was shaped just a few years later, in 1863, by a lady named Clemence Lozier. Emily Stowe, a graduate of the very institution in 1867, holds the honor of being the first female doctor in Canada. Another trailblazer, Susan McKinney Steward, surpassed societal barriers as the first African-American female doctor in New York State, graduating in 1870. The Women's College eventually closed in 1918, and its students found a new academic home in New York Medical College.
In 1875, Metropolitan Hospital Center was established as a municipal facility on Ward's Island. The majority of the staff were faculty from New York Medical College, marking one of the earliest relationships between a private medical school and a public hospital in the United States. Now, fast forward to 1889, New York Medical College constructed the first teaching hospital in America, Flower Free Surgical Hospital, thanks to the generous funding by Congressman Roswell P. Flower, who later served as governor.
The college initiated a minority scholarship program, a first for any medical school, in 1928. By 1935, the college shifted its outpatient services to the Fifth Avenue Hospital. The union of the college, including the Flower Hospital, and Fifth Avenue Hospital in 1938 resulted in the formation of New York Medical College, Flower and Fifth Avenue Hospitals.
New York Medical College relocated to Valhalla in 1972, encouraged by the Westchester County government's desire to develop an academic medical center. Westchester Medical Center was completed in 1977 and has since remained the primary academic medical center of the college. The college's alignment with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York in 1978 helped provide financial stability and a shared commitment to public health care. Following the closure of the Flower and Fifth Avenue Hospital in 1979, all operations moved to the Valhalla campus, signaling the start of a new chapter with a simplified name - New York Medical College.
In 2010, a grand celebration of 150 magnificent years of New York Medical College was held. That very year, Touro College, a Jewish-sponsored institution in Manhattan, agreed to take over the sponsorship from the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York. Thus, on May 25, 2011, New York Medical College officially became part of the Touro University System, creating one of the largest health sciences universities in the US. Its unique history of being a secular, then a Roman Catholic-aligned, and now a Jewish-sponsored educational institution is a testament to its diverse heritage.
The following year, new affiliates were announced, among them, St. Joseph's Medical Center in Paterson, New Jersey, and Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan. Other affiliates were added in 2014, widening the variety, including those from Newark, Brooklyn, and West Virginia.
In 2013, expansion took place with the acquisition of an old IBM Research building in Hawthorne, which provided critical offices and space for new programs. The campus also underwent some artistic enhancement in 2016 with the incorporation of whimsical statues that initially adorned the Grasslands Hospital children's wing (NYMC's current Sunshine Cottage Administration Building). The statues, supposedly based on characters from Lewis Carroll's novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, now embellish the campus pathway.
The Center of Excellence in Precision Responses to Bioterrorism and Disasters marked its opening on June 8, 2017. As the twelfth center of excellence in New York state and the first in Hudson Valley, its goal is to maximize efficiency in situations of terrorist attacks or disasters. Following the designation by Empire State Development, New York's economic development organization, a state grant of $500,000 was awarded to the college, affirming its ongoing commitment to health, education, and innovation.
