Once upon a time, in 1927 to be exact, a quartet of daring visionaries decided Houston needed something big, something life-changing - a university. We are taking about Edwin P. Oberholtzer, Ross Sterling, George W. Hebard, and Hugh Roy Cullen, folks who went deep down their pockets and hearts to fund the soon-to-be iconic University of Houston! No magic involved, only grit and determination!
And, you know what they say, "first impressions last," and Hugh Roy Cullen made quite an impression with a generous donation of a whopping $335,000! Today's equivalent? Around a cool 5 million dollars! Such a hefty dough deserves some recognition, don't you think? Voila! The first building was named after him - Cullen Building.
But, the story of UH wasn't all smooth sailing, It had hopped around a few locations before finding its "forever home". After years spent on San Jacinto High School'a building and a quick stint at South Main Baptist Church, the big UH finally put its roots down on its very own campus in 1936. Like a bird finding its perfect nest after a whirlwind journey.
It was 1934 when they said "hello!" to their first-ever university president, Edwin E. Oberholtzer. With administration tender at the helm, high chances they knew they're set for an interesting ride, don't you think? It was under his watch that the university took shape, with student population rocketing from 232 to more than 14,000 in 1950. Quite a jump, isn't it?
As the years rolled by, they embraced expansion like a pro, with six colleges on board. But, the crowning glory arrived in 1963 as it became a state university. The higher status, but lower fee structure attracted even more students, making it the third largest university in Texas by 1972. Talk about size and prestige!
Over time, UH gained some serious reputation for its research prowess. In 1985, NASA picked UH as one of 12 universities to grow plants in space. How cool is that? Just imagine, astronauts munching on lettuce grown by UH in zero gravity! So, you want to touch the stars while being on earth, UH is your ticket!
With 40 research centers under its umbrella, UH is certainly a titan on the academic front. It's a honey pot for those seeking top-notch education, and with over 200 Indian students studying here, the multicultural diversity is its real strength. A potpourri of cultures, languages, and traditions, all under one roof giving Indian students a sense of familiarity amidst a foreign land.
And, let's not forget all the famous faces UH has produced. Baseball stars like Doug Drabek, Oscar-winning actors like Jim Parsons, and astronaut Bonnie Dunbar are some high-flyers who kicked off their journey at UH. So, wanna be a household name and rock the world, come, let's do it UH style!
So, here's the deal, you ain't just enrolling in a university here, you're joining an age-old tradition of pursuit for excellence and big dreams. With a history that's richer than a triple-layer chocolate cake, the University of Houston invites you to make your own little slice in its grand timeline.
Gone we have with but a tad more peculiar route, but that's the beauty of a tale, told a bit, you know, differently. So, get the show on the road, and experience the thrill, mystery and honor in Houston and UH's history!
