When the calendar read October 1841, two Irish Augustinian friars embarked on a grand journey towards the future. With a dream of starting their own school, they purchased 200 acres of verdant land in Radnor Township. This piece of land affectionately called "Belle Air” belonged to a merchant called John Rudolph. It sealed the beginning of an institution christened "Augustinian College of Villanova."
Opening its gates in 1842, the College was more than a learning institution. Beyond its educational enterprise, it served the pastoral needs of Catholics residing in the fifteen-mile radius. Its chapel, dedicated by Bishop Francis Kenrick, stood as a beacon of faith and learning. And from Villanova’s mission, parishes burgeoned in Berwyn, Bryn Mawr, and Wayne.
Life, however, throws curveballs. In 1844, the Philadelphia Nativist Riots raged, torching the Saint Augustine's Church in Philadelphia. This tragic event crippled the Augustinians financially, forcing the still nascent College to shut its doors in February 1845. The resilient spirit of the Augustinians, however, sparked the College's reopening in the following year, and the first set of graduates walked through its portals in 1847.
By March 1848, the state’s governor recognised their academic enterprise by incorporating the school and bestowing it the power to grant degrees. This recognition translated into the first master's degree conferred on a student in 1859. Yet, times were tough. The Panic of 1857 sent a wave of financial crisis and the demand for priests to serve the burgeoning Catholic community of Philadelphia outweighed educational pursuits. The College had to shut down once again.
1857 was not the end. Like a phoenix, Villanova rose again, reopening after the Civil War in September 1865. Converted into a military hospital during the war, it shifted gears back to education, picking up where it left off. Its prep department was relocated to the town of Malvern along the Main Line, birthing what is known today as the Malvern Preparatory School.
Until 1918, Villanova was an all-boys citadel, not until it started evening classes for nuns attached to parochial schools. Fast-forward to 1938, we saw Villanova's first female graduate walk the stage. This journey towards inclusion moved at a steady pace, and by 1953, the nursing school opened its doors to full-time female students. Villanova embraced full coeducation in 1968.
It’s important to note that during World War II, Villanova participated in the V-12 Navy College Training Programme, preparing 131 men and women for a commission in the Navy. An impressive tally of 25 US Naval Admirals and Marine Corps Generals have walked through Villanova's corridors, a testament to its commitment to molding leaders.
A surge of warriors turned scholars after World War II marked a significant milestone for Villanova. The growing influx of students mirrored in the expansion of its academic staff. In 1953, the college of Nursing and School of Law were introduced, and Villanova was christened a University on November 18, 1953.
Villanova's campus has seen an impressive expansion between 1954 and 1963; 10 new buildings sprung up or were acquired to cope with the growing academic demand. The latest development in the life of this prestigious institution was made on June 23, 2023, when Villanova and Cabrini University unrolled a joint announcement detailing Cabrini's incorporation into Villanova post the 2023-24 academic year due to financial challenges. This merger is simply another chapter in the illustrious history of Villanova University, a melting pot of diversity, inclusivity, and academic excellence that continues to shape minds for the future.
