In the year 1859, when the U.S military threw open the doors of the land east of the Cascade Mountains, an intrepid soul named Cushing Eells journeyed from Willamette Valley to Waiilatpu, near the thriving town we now know as Walla Walla. He carried with him a memory of a tragic event that occurred 12 years prior, famously known as 'The Whitman Massacre'. During this horrific event, his missionary colleagues, Dr. Marcus Whitman, Narcissa Whitman, and some others tragically lost their lives to the Cayuse Indians.
Being a man of action, Eells devised a poignant way to honor his fallen comrades – a school for young boys and girls. To birth this idea, he secured a charter for 'Whitman Seminary', a pre-collegiate institution, and procured the historical Whitman mission site from The American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. Eells then packed his dreams, his family, and moved to the site, pouring his heart into making the Seminary a reality.
Ironically, although Eells wanted to establish Whitman Seminary on the Whitman mission site, the winds of fate and local factors led him to the bustling town of Walla Walla. Dorsey Baker, the wealthiest citizen of Walla Walla, generously gave some land near his house and a two-story wooden building soon sprung up to house the Seminary. Classes commenced in 1866, under the stewardship of Peasly B. Chamberlin, their first principal who unfortunately, resigned within a year and was replaced by Eells.
Post Eells's departure in 1869, Whitman Seminary faced tumultuous times, often grappling with the lack of students, finances for teachers, and the difficulty to stay open.
Now, imagine you are in 1882 and Whitman Seminary came to a difficult decision. They concluded their only chance of survival was as a college, a beacon of higher education amidst the wilderness. Enter Alexander Jay Anderson, former President of the Territorial University, who was tasked to mold this fledgling institution into a college. Anderson breathed new life into the Seminary and it was reborn as Whitman College on September 4, 1882.
During its initial years, Whitman College was served by a trifecta of faculty - Anderson, his wife, and his son. Despite financial troubles, the College managed to expand its footprint under Anderson's leadership. When Anderson left in 1891, he left considerable shoes to fill.
The decade of 1890s, marked by financial recession, tested Whitman College and its then-head, Reverend James Francis Eaton. Eaton was ultimately forced to resign in 1894, leaving a fragile Whitman College dangling on the edge of oblivion.
Step in Reverend Stephen Penrose, a local minister and former trustee, who took on the reigns of Whitman College. Through strategic moves such as establishing a solid endowment and highlighting its historical relevance, Penrose secured the future of Whitman College. Under his leadership, the college saw the construction of its first masonry building and significantly bolstered its faculty.
In 1907, Penrose launched the 'Greater Whitman' plan to pivot the college into an advanced technical and science center. However, this ambitious plan couldn't come to fruition due to capital limitations and by 1912, Whitman College embraced its status of a small liberal arts institution. The focus then turned towards co-curricular activities, fraternities, and sororities were introduced to the campus.
Throughout its history, Whitman College has been a setting of many firsts - Phi Beta Kappa installed its first chapter for a Northwest college in 1920, and the College had its first Rhodes Scholar alum. Even during World War II, Whitman remained relevant, participating in the V-12 Navy College Training Program.
Keen on studying abroad? Your journey could be a part of Whitman's legacy, a story written over centuries of trials, triumphs, and relentless dedication to education. It's a testament to the potential of a small idea to transform the world. This is the story of Whitman College, a beacon of knowledge and opportunity, where every student becomes a part of a historical tapestry.
