History Brandeis University

Once upon a time, Middlesex University, a medical school in Waltham, Massachusetts, found itself on the verge of financial ruin in the mid-1940s. This school, the only medical institution in Massachusetts that didn't limit the number of Jewish students, was left by its founder, John Hall Smith, to any group that wished to turn it into a non-sectarian school. However, obtaining accreditation from the American Medical Association was a hurdle they couldn't overcome.

In their darkest hour, Smith's son, C. Ruggles Smith, chanced upon a New York committee led by Israel Goldstein. They were in hot pursuit of the perfect campus to establish a Jewish-sponsored secular university. Seeing this as an opportunity to save his father's legacy, ruggles proposed to give them the Middlesex campus and charter.

Despite initial hesitation, Goldstein was thrilled by the prospect of a 100-acre campus, ideally located near New York and Boston, prominent Jewish hubs. He agreed and sprung into action, recruiting George Alpert, a Boston lawyer with fundraising expertise. To help bring national attention to this emerging university, they even managed to convince Albert Einstein to join them in 1946.

By March 1946, they had raised a hefty $10 million and used it to acquire the Middlesex University's land and buildings. What took shape was The Albert Einstein Foundation For Higher Learning, which after some deliberation, was named Brandeis University after Louis Brandeis in the summer of 1946.

Despite some internal disagreements and a brief departure of Einstein, Brandeis University was off to a promising start by the end of 1946. Though they had to shut down the medical school due to funding issues, the spirit of Brandeis remained unbroken. Abram L. Sachar, the chairman of the National Hillel Commission, became the first president of Brandeis University in 1948, promising to uphold Louis Brandeis' principles.

The first batch of students, 107 in number, were a diverse mix. Coming from 28 states and six foreign countries, they were a testament to the inclusive spirit of the university. Despite their unconventional location - formerly a barn, an old medical school building, two army barracks - they burned with the shared enthusiasm of being pioneers of something truly special.

As Brandeis expanded, so did its fame. Notable figures like Eleanor Roosevelt and Joseph M. Proskauer joined the board in 1949 and 1950 respectively. The university also initiated construction of on-campus dormitories and an athletic field in 1950. Institutes of higher learning with distinctive Jewish Studies programs began to emerge, showing the world its dedication to diversity and academic excellency.

The journey wasn't always smooth. From radical student activism and anti-Vietnam War protests of the 1960s, enduring financial crises in the 70s, to heated debates over honorary degrees in 2014, Brandeis weathered many storms. Through every trial and triumph, it remained true to the vision of its founders. Today, Brandeis stands tall as a testament to its spirit of inclusivity, diversity, excellence, and above all, the resilience of its community.
