Imagine, if you will, stepping back in time to the year 1851. That's when the Jesuits, true pioneers of education, founded the institution we now know as Saint Joseph's University, or St. Joe's for short. Named after the earthly father of Jesus, Saint Joseph, it is the United States’ seventh oldest Jesuit university, echoing centuries of dedication towards enlightening young minds.
Fast forward to June 1, 2022. A momentous occasion unfolded, as Saint Joseph's University expanded its horizons by acquiring the University of Sciences, the hotbed of professional programs in health and science. Occupational therapy, physical therapy, pharmacy, and physician assistant programs, among others, now grace our educational repertoire.
Our tale takes a fascinating turn when we revisit 1821, the year when 68 apothecaries - we call them pharmacists these days - met in Philadelphia's Carpenter's Hall. The mission? To revolutionize their vocation with improved scientific standards and training programs. They pledged to launch a pharmacy school, swearing to "guard the drug market from the introduction of spurious, adulterated, deteriorated or otherwise mischievous articles, which are too frequently forced into it".
And so it was, barely moments after their groundbreaking declaration, classes kicked off, marking the birth of America's first institution dedicated to pharmacy. To further bolster their initiative, the college launched the country's first academic journal centered on pharmacy in 1825.
But the road to where we stand today was not straight nor smooth. Our Sto. Joseph’s college first opened its doors on September 15, 1851, welcoming thirty-six eager students. The original campus, nestled between South 3rd and South 4th Streets and Walnut and Spruce Streets in Philadelphia, was next to the venerable Old Saint Joseph's Church.
In 1866, the college shifted base to a coveted block on Girard Avenue. It was here, between the 17th and 18th Streets, where Saint Joseph's Preparatory School stands today. Yet, our journey wasn't over. A move to the City Avenue Hawk Hill campus in November 1927 marked a new chapter, backed by a hefty million-dollar fund that enabled the purchase of twenty-three acres and the construction of a stunning, modern collegiate Gothic main academic building.
And what of symbols, you may ask? The Seal of Saint Joseph's University tells our story, ringing with our values. The wolves over a kettle pot reflect the benevolence of the Loyola family towards the less fortunate. The embroidered IHS are the initials of Jesus in Greek, a proud icon of the Society of Jesus. You'll note the seven stripes signifying the seven sons of the House of Loyola, who met their end defending their home. And last but not least, the elegant lily, our unique symbol, pays tribute to our patron saint, Saint Joseph.
Finally, let us glance at a recent milestone - March 10, 2023. On this day, Saint Joseph's University's board of trustees elected its first female president in its glorious 172-year history - Cheryl A. McConnell. A seasoned veteran of Jesuit higher education, McConnell had earlier served as Saint Joseph's interim president and provost and chief academic officer for three years. A new era had dawned, heralding the perpetual evolution of this storied institution.
So, as you commence your journey with St. Joe’s, remember, you're not just stepping into a university - you're becoming part of a legend.
