In the year 1867, the foundation stone of McDaniel College was laid down as the Western Maryland College. If you're wondering where it inherited its peculiar name, it was a nod to the Western Maryland Railroad. It's because John Smith of Wakefield, the college's first board chairman, was also the president of the railway company. However, it's an interesting fact to note that neither the railway nor the Methodist Protestant Church provided any financial support in establishing the college. Despite that, some charitable contributions trickled in from Methodist Protestant laymen, one of them was John Smith himself.
For a significant period, from 1868 to 1974, McDaniel experienced a voluntary fraternal tie with the Methodist Protestant, presently known as the United Methodist Church. Simultaneously, the Westminster Theological Seminary, closely located yet separate, was the preeminent site for training Methodist Protestant clergy in the region of Maryland. However, things took a twist when a court case involving state funding and religious ties challenged Western Maryland and other similar schools. Unlike the others, Western Maryland managed to severe its religious ties and emerged victorious.
Let's take a step back into the timelines of 1866-67, around this time, a building was being constructed which marked the beginning of the journey of the college. With an inaugural class of 37 men and women in 1867, Western Maryland became the pioneer in coeducation, shaping a bright future for both boys and girls. Not just in the south of the Mason-Dixon line, but it managed to make its name among the first all over the nation.
The novel charter of the school stated that students will be cherished without any discrimination based on their race, religion, color, sex, national, or ethnic origin. Yet, it wasn't until the 1960s that the college actually embraced diversity and became more representative of minority races.
One of the essential structures on the campus, the Baker Memorial Chapel, came into existence on April 20, 1958. Dedicated to W.G Baker and his family, the chapel constructed under the brilliance of architects Otto Eugene Adams and E.G Riggs, decorated a prominent sermon spot. The unique organ inside the chapel, one equipped with a whopping 2,310 pipes, was gifted by Roger J Whiteford and Joseph S Whiteford, both proud alumni of the college.
Interestingly, the college decided in 1975 to permanently eliminate religious symbols from its chapel and introduce strict quotas on Methodist representation among the faculty and board as part of a settlement with the American Civil Liberties Union. That wasn't the only deviating journey this college took. Until the 80s, a custom-built bunker housed the Wartime Information Security Program in Lewis Hall's basement, prepared for emergency censorship in the aftermath of a nuclear war.
Taking a leap to 1994, the college expanded its influence by laying the foundation of McDaniel College Budapest, previously known as Western Maryland College Budapest in association with College International Budapest. The college campus was a hot destination that summer, serving as the training spot for the Baltimore Colts and later the Baltimore Ravens NFL team till the transition in 2011.
On January 11, 2002, the college embraced a new identity. In honor of its alumnus William Robert McDaniel and his 65-year-long association with the college, Western Maryland transformed into McDaniel College. It was a deliberative process, which took inputs from various stakeholders, including students, faculty, and alumni.
The college's journey was not always smooth sailing. Under former McDaniel President Roger Casey's tenure, the ranking of the college took a plunge from 122 in 2010 to 134 in 2018 according to the U.S. News & World Report. It also witnessed a 17% drop in enrollment. In 2019, the same rating agency removed McDaniel from the list of National Liberal Art Colleges. In spite of these hurdles, the institution continues to strive. The current President, Julia Jasken, took the helm in November 2021, and she vows to carry forward the legacy of this esteemed college.
