Once upon a time in the 19th century, a visionary named Richard Whelan, the bishop of the Diocese of Wheeling, aimed to bring education to his growing city. He knocked on the doors of the Society of Jesus with a grand plan to establish a university. His dream, although not immediate, finally found ground over a century later, thanks to a generous donor.
Picture this, Sara Tracy, a woman with an estate that she's left to the diocese. A perfect opportunity, they thought, to purchase land from Mt. De Chantal Visitation Academy, laying the foundation for the future Jesuit college.
On November 24, 1953, the first stone was laid in partnership with the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston and the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus. It was on September 25, 1954, that the college was officially brought to life, welcoming eager students on September 26, 1955. This was, by no means easy. An impressive $2.75 million in start-up costs was raised, scarce facilities were managed, and a team of twelve Jesuit priests and four lay professors were pulled together.
By the 1987–1988 school year, the college had evolved into Wheeling Jesuit College. And then came the big honour in July 1996, university status. But the path wasn't all sunny. 2012 brought some clouds with university leadership caught in an accusation storm by the federal government for misusing NASA grant money. By 2015, the storm had cleared with Wheeling Jesuit settling at $2.3 million in restitution.
Cut to March 2013, Fr. James Fleming being selected as the tenth president, taking the office reigns effective July 1, 2013. But, the reigns were kept down on January 3, 2017, when Fleming stepped down from presidency.
In an unexpected turn of events in 2019, history, theology, philosophy, literature, and engineering majors were eliminated and 20 full-time faculty members were let go. The Jesuit community, who had been actively involved in shaping the educational journey at Wheeling, suddenly found their role diminishing. Wheeling's Jesuit Community, who lived at Whelan Hall since 1955, were key movers in academic arenas like the Appalachian Institute on campus.
April 2019 brought sweeping changes with the elimination of theology and philosophy programs, which were core to the university's identity as a Jesuit institution. In response, the Jesuits decided to cut academic ties with the university at the end of the 2018–2019 academic year.
To top it all, in July, Monsignor Kevin Quirk, the chairman of the university's board of trustees, resigned after the Washington Post revealed a scandal involving his former colleague guilty of sexual abuse and financial impropriety. This shockwave led the university to drop "Jesuit" from its name and rebrand to Wheeling University.
Despite the tumultuous journey, the institution stands today as an enduring symbol of resilience, enriched with history and ready to mould future generations.
