The remarkable journey of Wichita State University (WSU) all began back in 1886. Rev Joseph Homer Parker, a visionary clergyman with a strong belief in women's education, dreamed of founding a women's school. This private school was supported by his own church, Wichita's Plymouth Congregational Church and was whimsically named the "Young Ladies College," "Wichita Ladies College," and the "Congregational Female College." The aim was to educate women who were twelve years or older, but alas, this ambitious project never really saw the light of day.
Things took a turn in the year 1887. The project's leaders were gifted a land parcel by the developers of the neighboring Fairmount Neighborhood. In a wave of gratitude, they quickly renamed their dream institution to Fairmount College. The vision was grand, as Fairmount aspired to be the "Vassar of the West." To add to this charm, the neighboring residential streets were named after prestigious women's colleges like Vassar and Holyoke, names that continue to echo in the local neighborhood even in 2023.
Our story further unfolds in 1892 where a corporation took the reins and bought the property. They rebranded the preparatory school as Fairmount Institute, also known as the Fairmount Academy. This time, they swung the doors open, in September, to welcome students, both boys and girls over the age of 12.
Certainly, by 1895 the institute evolved yet again to become Fairmount College, offering collegiate classes to men and women. The Congregational Education Society generously funded this venture and chose Dr. Nathan Jackson Morrison as the captain of this educational ship, appointing him as the president of the new college.
As the pages flipped to the 1900s and 1910s, the college experienced substantial growth. They erected a men's dormitory – Fiske Hall in 1904, which was dedicated in 1906, and also constructed a Carnegie library in 1908 which, was occupied in 1909 and dedicated in 1910. It was during this time, in 1906, the school's athletic teams adopted the unique nickname "wheatshockers" during a football game, a nod to the players' tendency to harvest wheat during the season.
The Fairmount trustees, by 1915, decided to gradually close the institute but, over the next two decades, its students formed the backbone of Fairmount College's student body. However, the wind of change blew the institute off its course when it faced dire financial troubles in the 1920s.
Despite a failed attempt to get the city of Wichita to acquire the college in 1925, they were victorious by the next year. The institute transformed into the Municipal University of Wichita, known as "Wichita University" or "WU", the first municipal university to be established west of the Mississippi.
Fast forward to the 1950s, with the leadership of President Harry Corbin, the university embarked on a journey to join the State of Kansas Regents System and stood alongside the University of Kansas and Kansas State University. Despite the challenge of persuading reluctant powerful allies, the University managed to become part of the state system of higher education on July 1, 1964, changing its name to Wichita State University (WSU).
Finally, an interesting tidbit, of all places, WSU is home to the original building of the first Pizza Hut! The building initially sat at Kellogg and Bluff, was moved to WSU in the 1980s to avoid a road expansion. After three decades, the university relocated it once again in 2017, this time to the Innovation Campus, where it stands today. And thus, the epic tale of Wichita State University continues!
