History College of William & Mary

Once upon a time, back in pre-colonial Virginia, the leaders dreamed of a school where young Native Americans and the colonists' sons could expand their knowledge. Thus, on February 8, 1693, the College of William & Mary was born, named after the ruling monarchs of the time. This education hub has been around ever since, making it the second-oldest in the United States.

The initial vision for the college took shape way back in 1618, but historical events like the Indian Massacre of 1622, English Civil War, and Bacon's Rebellion played spoilsport. Nevertheless, the thirst for knowledge persisted as construction for the college began in 1695 at a place called Middle Plantation, now known as Williamsburg. This building, the Sir Christopher Wren Building, holds the record for being the oldest college building in America.

Known for its association with pivotal figures in American history, the college distinguished itself on multiple fronts. It produced US Presidents like Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, and John Tyler, and was even associated with the illustrious George Washington who got his license to survey through the college. This association resulted in many firsts like the first institution with a royal charter, first Greek-letter society - Phi Beta Kappa in 1776, first collegiate society - F.H.C. Society in 1750, first student honor code, and the first law school in America.

Religious freedom was established during the American Revolution, and the College of William & Mary underwent a significant transition with help from future US President James Madison, Right Reverend James Madison, and Thomas Jefferson, who was on the Board of Visitors. The college opened graduate schools in law and medicine, becoming one of the institutions claiming to be the first university in the United States.

As we journey through the 1700s, in the midst of intellectual fervor, a revolution of a different kind was taking shape. The F.H.C Society, known popularly as the Flat Hat Club, was established on November 11, 1750, becoming the nation's first collegiate secret society. Other secret societies popped up over time, making the college a beacon for intellectual discourse and clandestine activities.

Amidst all the sense of enlightenment and progress, a daunting figure looms in history. Thomas R. Dew, who served as a professor and president of William & Mary until his death in 1846, staunchly defended the inhumane practice of slavery. A significant fire in 1859 destroyed the College Building, but some structures like the Wren Building, President's House, Brafferton, and Prince George House survived.

The American Civil War affected the college due to widespread enlistment in the Confederate Army, causing it to close in 1861. The College Building was used for military purposes but suffered damage due to arson by drunken soldiers in 1862. The end of the Civil War saw it reopen with Benjamin Stoddert Ewell as its 16th president, but lack of funds led to closure again. The college resurged in 1888 as a teacher-training institution, supported by a $10,000 appropriation from the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The dawn of the 20th century saw a flurry of activities. It was one of the first universities in Virginia to admit women in 1918. The goodwill of benefactors like John D. Rockefeller Jr. enabled the restoration of buildings, leading to the establishment of Colonial Williamsburg. The college also initiated a branch in Norfolk, Virginia in 1930, known as Old Dominion University today.

Fast forwarding to the modern era, the College of William & Mary continued making strides, retaining its ties with the United Kingdom. Notable British dignitaries like Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, Prince Charles, and Queen Elizabeth II have visited the college. Former British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, served as the Chancellor of the College of William & Mary.

The college continues to evolve, introducing or considering various initiatives such as amalgamating with Eastern Virginia Medical School. Through the centuries, the College of William & Mary has strived to foster intellectual discourse, become an institute for leaders, and remain deeply connected to its historical roots while moving towards an inclusive future.
